Dont know if Ive posted in the right area but Ive bought a mountain bike and would like to get on the road. Ive had several bikes in the past but been put off by lack of confidence and no biking friends to chivvy me along. This year Im determined Im going to crack this and join the merry band of regular cyclists I see on a daily basis. I dont want to waste this bike purchase as ive wasted so many others in the past.
Ok can anyone recommend where to start as in how long I should go out for and how often to get to know my bike? Of course I dont expect to be riding up mountains and going down hills I just want to gain confidence and at least have a goal to aim for  You never know I might end up going up mountains and down hills eventually.
I live in the Wirral area of Merseyside but cannot find any biking clubs which require a short cycle to get to as I dont have a car to transport my bike to venues. so I guess Im asking for two things here.
Thanks in advance..

Where on the Wirral are you?
Have you checked out http://www.eurekacyclistscafe.co.uk/ on the clubs section?
The mountain bike will be a good starter, but for real road riding a skinny tired maching would be better.
Till the little one came along I tried to go out about 3-4 times a week, started doing a 10 mile loop, which nearly killed me, then changed the route to include hills, then added milage and hills as I got strength up etc.
I have a few routes around the Wirral that take all the above in. I now try and ride 100 miles a month, not massive due to a knee op last year and a new born, but doing my best to get the mileage up.
