Bonk?

Cycling back from work last night I think I experienced my first ever full on bonk..

Was a hilly 35 mile ride and at about the 30 mile point I started feeling dizzy, wobbly as hell, hungry like I've never felt, hands went numb and struggling to hold 12mph! This got steadily worse for the last 5 miles and climbing the last small hill into my road I was going so slowly that I struggled to stay upright!

I stopped outside my flat, got off my bike and my legs went. It took me several minutes to get up the stairs into my flat!

Once inside I sat in the floor shivering violently and eating anything I could find. I still feel fairly broken now!

I've done well over this distance before and have been cycling for several years now as well as running all my life.

I never felt anything like it, is this a classic bonk? What should I do to avoid it happening again??

Did you eat/drink anything during your ride and were you well fed/watered before starting?

Another explanation is it could be a virus.
    More problems but still living....

I ate lots during the day although my lunch and mid afternoon meal where both on white bread as I had to go to greggs. i normally have a very clean diet....

Didn't eat during the ride, but had a bottle of water with me. I've never felt i needed food up to 50 miles or so.

It was cold last night and I ws in shorts and had no cap so maybe that coupled with a long day, unfamilier and very hilly route just finished me off!

I'm a mess today though, can't think straight and just want to go back to bed!!

I've been experiencing similar effects this week but not so severe as the distances were quite a bit shorter. Last weekend I had a 60 mile riide with no problems, this week I was bonking on a 10 mile commute so laid off all week. Today I tried to join a ride but was heading the same way so turned back home.
I'm going to top up my iron levels with a few guinness while watching Paris - Roubaix and the rugby. :D
On the serious side though maybe more rest then a series of ramped up rides will help.

Pretty certain in your case it isn't bonking, unless you have fasted for the entire time you have been off the bike. Perhaps it is a virus, or something else.
