But I really don't know what I want.

All of the current contract offerings seem to be crap! I'm really not feeling this capped fair usage on the data :(

I have unlimited data on my phone as its a 2 year old contract from before the data sanctions were brought in. Plus 500 texts and 500 any time minutes for £30 a month.

I wanted an iPhone 4, but i'm not sure now as the contracts are crap/there is an upfront payment.

I don't want a HTC that much, GF has the desire and i'm not overly impressed.

Anyone got the Nokia N8? It seems to have loads of connectivity options and has a really good camera (am actually looking for a phone with a better camera as i'm fed up of my crap iPhone camera.).

But what software does the N8 have? is Symbian any good?

Meh.... there doesn't seem to be much choice at the mo :(

If your happy with your current phone you can get good deals on sim only, mines done monthly and i pay £15 a month and get 750minutes and unlimited data and texts, that was from phoning up and saying that i wanted to leave.

  • Yeah i'm going to try the"give me a better deal or i'll leave" thing, but my iPhone is getting a bit boring... fancy something newer!
Then again if i can get a cracking deal I might as well!

I am in the same boat - but to be honest I have decided to wait for the iPhone5, which is rumoured to be out come June/July.

I rang O2 told them this was the case and what would they do till then and they offered me a 30 day rolling contract, half the price of the contract i am on now. Yep it has data capping but the allowances are bloody big, it aint worth worrying about - IMHO

I guarantee that the contracts will be ridiculous!

Erm, alternatively, if you're happy with your current phone, you can just stick with it,

Why pay more for no good reason? He can keep his number, keep his phone, keep his tarriff but just pay less??

Bit he's already said they don't do unlimited plans anymore.

Unlimited is normally only 500mb or a gig. Fair usage see. Even if he did go over on a sim only tariff he is still not likely to go anywhere near his current bill

I've been told by many ladies, and seen many videos, that Sybians are fing awesome for them!

Oh wait, the phone stuff, not the other stuff.

by all accounts the HTC Desire is top dog, see http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and ... day-645440

closely followed by the HD version and the iPhone 4.

however I understand that there are a bunch of new smart phones waiting in the wings so I'm holding off for a few months to see what comes up.

Got 2 gig on mine, unlimited texts, 600 minutes free calls per month. 20 quid. Unlimited will be more than that, otherwise, it's not unlimited, is it?

nope. Fair usage. o2 for example has "unlimited texts", but the limit is 12000. Why do you have 2 gig? Unless you are using your phone for mobile internet tethering, you are probably paying for a lot more tan you need.

The only thing that is truly unlimited is wifi, but thats because you arent using the network.

I have no fair usage on my current contract. Fair usage wasn't built in when my contract was taken out 2 years ago.

I have used over 3gig of 3g in a month and not been charged.

tethering..... i didnt have the net for a while
  • i'm really undecided about the nokia N8... really need to go have a play with one in store.

Had a look on a few "tech" sites and the N8 gets good reviews, but the OS seems to be a bit bland and boring... a long way from iPhone/Android.

    huuummmm.

    Any good blackberrys out?

Wouldn't Bother with the n8, very buggy. Torch is nice but not really a play phone. Hd 2 our desire

  • there's a new blackberry curve due out in Q2 this year and in Q3 there's a new bold and new torch due out, and a new Bold touch due out later,
the current bold is the best BB experience, (9780) is a great phone, has more memory than the bold 9700, basically the same except 256mb Vs 512mb, both can run OS6 which is the latest version of the software allowing you to run flash etc.but obviously the 9780 runs it a little better!
BUT!! if your coming from an iphone then be aware that b;ackberry's are first and foremost communication devices (no better email phone out there! ) and media is added in rather than the iphones Media device with phone abilities! web browsing etc. is still good but they are very different from iphones!
you'll find that the keyboard will take a little getting used to but when you suss it ( use of thumbs on the keys) you'll be typing away almost as fast as on a full size keyboard,
the torch is a great phone but not quite as good as it could have been, (a bit like iphones and the many updated versions that appear!!) but does have a touch and normal full qwerty keyboard,

ive had my curve (8900) for coming up for 2 years now and Love it, had an oldeer simpler berry before it which was great, really dont think i'll be tempted onto anything other than a new blackberry!

  • whats the addtional BB data thing I keep seeing?
  • most contracts add £5 for bb's email use etc, gives unlimited email use, doesnt include mms/text but i simply email pics to people rather than mms!

bb's can use a lot of data through emails, but mosdt places offer unlimited emails with the extra £5.

i really like BB, im on my third, a torch and it is super duper.

as mentioned above though, if you like your phone to do more than communicate with folk you wil end up dissapointed, they dont use a gajillion of apps like an iphone (although there are apps available)

That's not unlimited, that's limited to 12,000. An arbritary limit is stil a limit.

I got 2 gigs for 20 quid, I tend to download a lot of music over 3G, use live earth and so on, use remote desktop to fix server issues.
I've not gone over 2 gig, but I have gone over 1 gig.

The 'unlimited' thing is daft, is some stupid EU law on that they have to cap it still.

My contract ends this month. Going to get a cheap contract, as just dumped my bird so won't have to send her 50 texts a day to keep her happy lol.
  • hahaha ^

Yeah the problem with unlimited is that the networks were slowing down due to everyone rinsing the data

Been having a look at cheap phones too... but even they are expensive for what you get!

Whatts the samsung omnia 7 like?
That's the windows phone 7 one, right?
Dunno about the Omnia, but I'm really liking my HTC Trophy 7. Windows phone is absolutely nothing at all like the old windows mobile, so don't let that put you off.
Mine is misbehaving a bit since I dropped it for about the 20th time, but is fine 99.99999% of the time.

I particularly like how the win phone collates all your contacts together, from MSN, facebook, yahoo, etc. So, if you want to do ANYTHING with any of your contacts, you just go to "contacts" Sounds weird until you check it out, then it all makes sense.

Whatever happens DO NOT get Symbian... it's quite literally the laughing stock of the tech world.... it's crap.. shame too, as the N8 is a great bit of hardware

For me it would have to be an Android Handset, iPhone is just so expensive... i dont like the locked-in-ness of it either....

Win 7 has potential... but it needs time to grow....

HTC make great kit IMHO, very solid and nice to use.... Samsung and LG also make nice stuff too... and the Sony Ericsson Experia x10 mini is good for a budget phone.

for £30 a month i'd get a Desire or a desire HD... or something else from the HTC stable.

not a fan of the Galaxy S... feels plasticy.... although a new version has just come out so it should be cheap... same with the Desire though...
    I like bikes and stuff
  • there's a chap on the stw forum who's been in a similar boat to you,
he's gone for the Orange Sanfransisco, and unlocked debranded and loaded on andriod 2.2

means nothing to me being a blackberryist, but like the ability to customise you can get with android,
