Reasons to Cycle

It sleeted/snowed on way home last night, I got very cold and wet (I was in shorts and had just slagged off a colleague who put on thermals under long leggings and two pairs of gloves - justice was served to me cold and wet on Maryhill Road!)
Anyway it froze overnight and was a black ice warning. So for my own safety decided to get train. Plus gives me a chance to refresh locker with shirts. Also as I was drowned rat when I got in, and conditions were apalling, cancelled the night MTB run.
Sun shining now and pissed offf I will be getting train home. So as a bit of fun, why do you cycle? Limit is 3 reasons per post.

Assuming you are talking generally and not commuting specific...
1. It gives me a post ride buzz
2. It gives me something to talk about
3. I just like it (probably due to the post ride buzz and not the struggling along when out on the bike)
(Didn't realise the weather was that bad last night, it was OK generally dry where I was)0 -

1 I like it
2 It keeps me fit
3 Traffic jams are really depressing0 -
1. Fitness, to lose weight and to be able to eat what I want
2. Faster - Commute by train/tube/walk takes around 3 hours per day, on a bike its around 1.20, more time with the family.
3. Fun - while everyone else is packed into trains and tubes I'm looking at the sunrise in Richmond ParkBianchi C2C - Ritte Bosberg - Cervelo R3

It started as very cold rain, turned to driving sleet, and ended up as snow, the roads were rivers then from Bearsden were covered in slush, then snow by time I got home. Possibly the worst conditions I have cycled home in. My sealskinz socks filled with cold water, my (alleged) waterproof gloves soaked though."Encyclopaedia is a fetish for very small bicycles"0 -
1. I rather be dripping with sweat on the bike than on the train
2. I save £8.70 everytime I commute in
3. I get to wear lycra without having to be a member of a private club0 -

Yet the center to east of the country (where I was driving down from Falkirk to Carluke) was mostly dry and clear.0 -
I get a great sense of freedom - probably assisted by the happy chemical dump that occurs when you exercise.0

Ice spikers on the MTB this morning and guess what - I fell off.
Nope, not on ice but at a pelican crossing - lights changed quicker than I was expecting, forgot my right foot was clipped in and the rest you can imagine...

You always know exactly what time you get to your destination.
You always get a seat.
Cycling 12 miles a day means you can drink as much beer as you like.*
You see things you'd miss if you were driving- the change of the seasons for instance.
It's faster, cheaper and far more pleasant than public transport.
You can burn up other cyclists and overtake without acknowledging them , appearing to be trying too hard and without letting them hear you pant.

The prospect of not being able to ride fills me with dread. I have long said that I want to die suddenly whilst riding.
There was a thread in Cake Stop a few months ago about an old bloke (~70s/80s) riding a very nice road bike found dead at the side of a road in the middle of nowhere and no signs of an accident. A post mortem concluded he died of natural causes (heart attack or stroke I think) whilst on a solo ride.
Sounds like the perfect way to go to me (not for a few decades yet though).FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future

1. Fitness, working towards a Tri perhaps.
2. I'd rather spend £13.10 on gear than give it to PT.
3. I don't need a car.0
