  • A much more interesting and varied race than Qatar. Some good riders in there. A very tough summit finish, likely deciding the winner and a difficult TT the next day.

Gesink, Rodriguez, Vino are riding and are not known to be defensive.

Phinney is back in, looking forward to him squaring off against Fabian (if he beats him then maybe Fabian will have some extra motivation this year).

World Champ is riding (one cool bike).

EBH in for Wiggins (much better value).

And a whole host of quality riders.

  • Cheers for the profiles. Looking forward to this one.

Be interesting to see how Phinney does.

Would like to see Gesink do well, personally.

Looking forward to this race, it really has potential as a good race with decent terrain. It justifies far better TV coverage than it had last year when the commentator was basically given editted highlights and a travel show to present. What does the 9m, 10m 58m etc. in the top left of each elevation mean :?

    Ugly style though...
  • 9m equals 9 metres above sea level.

Cavendish has stayed on for this so will presumably be going for sprint wins. Be interesting to see how he does. Be interesting to see how Christian vandevelde is going as well.

He's really searching for some shape at the moment isn't he? Trying to get enough for MS-R I suspect.

Guess he can't use races like Het Volk to give his form a bit of a kick start.

Doh, thanks. If I'd spotted the ones at the finish as well I could have worked that out

Looks like a very interesting couple of stages, defintely nothing like Qatar.

Stage 4 and 5 pretty serious terrain for early season training races - 2 kms of 13.5% after another 1.5km of 13.5%! Oman goes all Giro on us.

I love that in stage 2 there's a climb they imaginatively named 'Climb'. Must be desolate out there
  • That climb is like 18km long but Merckx said 6km would be enough.

That's a good course for an early season race. The 6km tough climb is nicely balanced by the 18km TT. I'm with Merckx though, think a climber will win...though not sure how much form the likes of Gesink and J Rod will be carrying so we could see a surprsising winner...or someone like Vino who seems to be able to keep his form topped up through the year.

Gutted there's not more TV coverage, but I suppose it's still a new event and needs to take hold in the way Qatar has done.

The two countries are light years apart in terms of viewer appeal, as has already been discussed on here. Maybe one day they'll go to the top of Jebel al-Akhdar - it's supposed to be amazing up there, though I've never made it during my trips to Oman to date...

Small problem in Oman, most of the bikes have not turned up! Only Sky, BMC & Garmin have theirs - delayed start to the day...

A video. Cav may have taken it if it wasn't for a little swerve by Bos at the end.

Not a bad sprint from Cav considering how far back and across he was.

A bit reckless nearly taking some Team Sky rider down though..

I didn't say it wasn't. I'm just saying it may have helped Bos win. Photos show that there was millimetres in it: http://twitpic.com/404dq0

Cav should have been closer on his wheel to begin with.

True. It was only an observation. I think Cav would have had him without the swerve. Which shows Cav is in decent form, as Bos is good in the 150k races. It's only a pre-season friendly.

Cav's versions of events is that the 2km to go banner read 3km so he got caught out a bit. Dunno if that is true but looking at the reason for the late start and the farce that was the race updates its not hard to believe it was true.
