I usually shop at Aldi or Tesco Metro which don't have meat counters, I can't go to the proper supermarket until I get panniers which won't be for a long time.

Ah, such a fine reposte. Erudite, witty, full of charisma, charm and displaying the full grasp of the English language that bought the world the likes of Keates, Shakespeare, Kipling and Tennyson.

Owen would have been proud to be in the trenches had he seen the best that the a modern scholar such as you could produce. I bet your parents, if you ever find out who they are, would be proud to read such a charming text.

In the words of Wilde, you, Sir, are a knob jockey of the first order. I suggest that you stick to Tesco Metro and maybe you'll get some discounted chops at the end of your shift.

Blimey,he's already like the Salford locals :D

Cheetham Hill market is not far Will but what about Fri/Sat evenings? If you aren't studying or down Canal St you could go the S-market then. BTW don't bother with Salford precinct. They would eat their own young up there if they could

Only if I can make a poor excuse about it ironicalcal like and a deliberate cheap pun aimed at today's shockingly appalling edukashunal sistim.

Naturally everything I do in the future is in line with the above - I want it to be my tag line, a bit like Booyakasha or Wassup!

Now if that caveat doesn't cover any future spelling and grammar mistakes, I don't what will.

Back at the ranch, the discussion reverted back to meat ....
  • So are the butchers in Manchester expensive then? The one down the street from me is cheap as chips and has quality quality stuff. Bought a pork loin fillet on saturday for £3 and not an ounce of fat on it. My mate bought some liver at same time and it was as clean as a whistle. We don't hold back on our meat either, he's an ex-chef and I'm an aspiring one so I don't cook sh!t£.

I must admit that I'm not a particular fan of that delicacy either - I tried it once with a relly nice Bearnaise sauce and some Lyonnais potatoes but it just didn't feel right or taste any good. Never again is what I say.

It was also a bugger to get off the frying pan as well - destroyed the wife's Le Creuset - I ended up blaming the mess on a member of staff and having to shoot her as a punishment for a crime she didn't commit (a bit like a catering style "A Team" scenario, but without that Mad Murdock dude to confuse matters).

If only I had employed James Blunt as in house dhobi wallah instead - I wouldn't have minded shooting him for not destroying one of my wife's frying pans for a dish he didn't commit ......

Does anyone shop there often, was gonna go in there today to hunt down some meat at a good price but assumed they'd not take debit card and I had heavy stuff on me.

Anyway just wondering for anyone who does shop there or has before, how cheap can I get some meat for such as 400g of chopped up lamb (that is £2.45 in Aldi and I want it cheaper)

    What about salmon, chicken etc...

    Cheers.

Ah I see, trying to emulate the Schlecks are you. 1.40sec in it all becomes clear. :)

  • Will try going to places like the wing yip and the shops in cheetam hill you'll find plenty of cheap cuts of meat which will make great stews, curries etc.... or if you know of any pakistani markets such as worldwide go there. I get all my mutton, lamb and chicken from there in a variety of cuts. There fresh veg and herbs are also top class and really cheap.

Will, you've basically got two options.

    1) Buy the cheap supermarket meat, which is basically crap and full of water (amongst other things)
    2) Buy the less popular cuts of decent meat, they're cheap but still good quality.

Firstly, find a decent butcher and ask him for the cheaper cuts. You're still getting good quality meat, but the cuts which aren't so popular. Braising Steak is realtively cheap, Ox tail is cheap, but it's becoming more expensive as it's becoming fashionable.

Look for the well used muscle groups, the cheaper cuts are generally those which need long slow cooking. If you can, get youself a slow cooker (there's a thread on here somewhere about them) chuck the meat in with everything else, go for a ride for a couple of hours and once you're back.......... hey presto, fantastic meal !!

Bottom line, go and talk to a butcher and ask his advice on the cuts and cooking them. Have a quick look on Google, find out about the cuts of meat, rather than just buying cheap stuff.

Hope you eat well tonight

  • I would also recommend learning to cook.... The last time you were on here looking for dietry tips, you were IIRC microwaving mars bars

And I still do microwave mars bars, it's not right to assume just cause someone microwaves the odd mars bar a month that it means they live off them.

How would you be if all you ate was one mars bar per month? Probably dead.
