Does anyone shop there often, was gonna go in there today to hunt down some meat at a good price but assumed they'd not take debit card and I had heavy stuff on me.

Anyway just wondering for anyone who does shop there or has before, how cheap can I get some meat for such as 400g of chopped up lamb (that is £2.45 in Aldi and I want it cheaper)

What about salmon, chicken etc...

Cheers.

er nope and nope. roadkill is cheaper although cows tend to make a mess when you clobber them...

  • Why are you buying cheap meat? Spend some cash on some good quality meat and it will taste beautiful (unlike cheap meat which doesn't taste of much) and it will be a lot better for you.

That is also not even bringing the animal cruelty point in to it.

I know it is sometimes hard to pay more for what seems like the same thing but food is such a special thing, especially meat, you are missing out on all the enjoyment of it when you buy the cheap stuff.

    I agree BenBlyth.
Supermarket meat tastes of egg boxes, now try the same cut from a butchers shop and its a whole different taste.
Having spent a good few years in the food production industry most meat destined for the supermarket is force fed. Most of the animal doesn't develope fully. Its all about getting them fat the fastest and out of the door and onto the shelf even faster.
I like to get things cheaper but some things I wont skimp on.

If you really want cheap meat go to a farmers market and buy your own lamb. You get to feed it whatever you like, call it what ever you like and then when its right eat it!!

You live in Manchester don't you?

Go in there and find out for yourself, I gather they encourage face to face retailing.

    WTF? Are you serious?

It doesn't matter of you are a student or not - most of us have been at one point. Normal rules apply: you don't buy the cheapest cr5p meat you can get hold of: cheap cuts will have little to no nutritional value (force fed, etc etc), will be mostly fat and not meat and generally taste like shyyyte. I don't even want to get into provenance discussions …….

Again, I won't bring the animal cruelty into it as this blatantly obvious.

Spend the extra couple of pounds on good meat - we used to spend al ot of time tracking down out of date beer/deals and sopend the money saved on decent food.

To tell the truth, I can't actually believe I'm having to type this ……. "New" university I presume?

You get what you pay for (up to a point) with meat.

To be honest, I expect you'll be pushed to find anywhere that can undercut the big supermarkets for price.

Unless maybe you're a member of a cash-&-carry such as CostCo. But that means buying in bulk, which means having a big enough freezer. Unless a group of your mates chip-in and split the meat between you.

    Other options...
    - buy the less desirable cuts of meat (don't know what they are though).
    - eat smaller portions of the better quality stuff.
    - discover how to make meat go further
    - change the habit of eating meat with every meal

I guess I'll eat no meat unless I get it in tinned stew or from home cooked meal and stick to protein shakes after a ride then cause my food budget is 10-20 quid a week MAX.

What part of Mcr are you living in Will?

Don't know much about the Arndale but Waitrose on Bridge St have some good offers on after 6/6.30. Re meat - aim for quality. Aldi do free range chicken for a £5, you can get 3 meals out of that. Local markets are good for things like peppers/potatoes/courgettes etc

Jeebus. £10-20 a week for food?

You need to reprioritise your budget. How do you expect to cycle, study and keep healthy if you limit yourself so much?

Buy some real food. You can't rely on getting all your protein from shakes as you'll lose out on all of the other goodness in meats and fish.

    Will,

You're at university, right? You don't need a bunch of 30/40 year olds to explain why buying cheap meat is a no-no on so many levels!

Chicken is cheaper (even when buying free range, organic etc) than red meat and generally can be made to go further. I rarely (excuse the pun) eat red meat and manage just fine with chicken, fish and plenty of vegetables. And the odd slug of Guinness.

Don't buy cheap meat, fella.

Cheap meat can be fantastic, try cuts like lamb shank, oxtail and pork belly. All cheap "offcuts" but if you cook 'em long 'n' slow, they turn out lovely. I got a slow cooker for Christmas and am discovering casseroles and tagines. Stick the slow cooker on "low" in the morning, when you get home you have lovely tender slow cooked meat. The only thing is that cheap cuts of meat can ben quite fatty....

Hows about beans on toast??Plenty good for you and pretty tasty. If you want to be extra posh get them with sausages in, that way you get the meat you want.
Seriously 10-20 a week for food?? I cant spend that doing a sunday roast.
I like food and want to enjoy every meal so I don't skimp but I'm not extravergant either.

Beans on toast has no protein in it that aids recovery.

I've lived on a budget of £20 a week for a while for food, that includes feeding the cat. You can find cheap cuts at reasonable prices but I'd avoid the posh butchers who do charge a lot. The local market has some good stuff at very good prices, but stay away from mucky, smelly looking set ups, you're likely buying crap. It's worth making friends with some market stall holders too, sometimes they knock you a bit off ;)

You can get a box of 20 eggs for around £1.40 from the supermarket. they're not free range but at 2.40 for 6 FR eggs they can cluck off. I can recommend Morrisons' own brand Eat Smart £1 meals, very nicely made and the mince beef hot pot is lovely.

One way I manage to suppliment the money I have, go to the supermarket 20m before they close, then go to the meat counter - they want to offload meat due to sell by dates etc. Ask them what they have going cheap and see what you can get away with. I bought 10 pork pies at 20p each! I froze them and heat them to a very high temperature. You can get pizzas for 40p which were around £3 a few hours ago - you can freeze half, and have it the following day!

Home brand makes are cheaper, soon as you start buying McVities and Heinz you're paying through the nose - I get my beans, cereal, chips etc as home brands. You know those Kelloges (sp) cereal bars? Supermarkets have their own make, taste the same and do the same job.

I usually shop at Aldi or Tesco Metro which don't have meat counters, I can't go to the proper supermarket until I get panniers which won't be for a long time.
