IMO it's mostly in the mind.

I was snailing along over the weekend, my joints ached and the tyres felt like treacle. Suddenly, a small unleashed dog charges at me from a few metres to my left, yapping loudly. Suddenly I transformed into Chris Hoy, picked up my speed for the remaining 2 miles of my journey and stopped feeling tired and achey.

That's probably adrenaline from a "fight or flight" type situation. Adrenaline is natures rocket fuel for use in emergencies. It dulls aches and pains, wakes you up and makes you more alert and at the same time give you a boost of energy...

And from where can I purchase this magic you call adrenaline?
It often comes free with rush-hour traffic.

How you feel on the ride in will be more down how much sleep you had and what you had to eat the night before than what you had for breakfast.

I usually have some fruit juice (a few calories of instant energy) and half a malt loaf (stops me feeling hungary but isn't heavy.

I had a series of off days earlier in the year and then I found my brake was rubbing.......

This week has been slow... Maryhill Road weather bad, the surface bad, the traffic bad. 2 downpours filled in all the potholes nicely....

So this week been pootling. Told a work mate yesterday before heading home my tyres felt a but spongy and i should pump them up. Guess what, forgot to and got a nice snakebite flat. Good practice to change the tube though.

REMINDER - stick the Snicker Plus tyres back on at the weekend!!

Not looking for speed this week or next, just steady, safe commute.

yep always the same thing, 2 weetabix with a sprinkling of sugar. im currently trying to lose weight aswell so maybe that is something to do with it?

my commute is only 12 miles per day but i'm only just get back into cycling after a break of years.

its weird though some days im full of beans like yesterday, i was cruising along at 15mph but today ahh man alive it was like i was riding with two flat tyres (i have since checked said tyres an they are fine!)

Difficult to say without knowing more about you, but interesting you said you were trying to lose weight. A friend of mine had a V02 max and general fitness test in a lab the other day, and really struggled to get the power wattage they expected from him. One of the specialists asked him about his diet and questioned whether he was on a diet. He was, and they felt he wasn't eating anywhere near enough. Just didn't have the energy.

But, as above...really difficult to say as there are too many variables and we are all different.

    Interesting.
You really need to do VO2max and ramp tests when rested. Also, they're pretty sport specific. For example, I did one on the bike at university and creamed a runner who was of a decent standard. He got a much better score on a treadmill version of the test...

My off days usual coincide after a night in the gym squatting and lifting, a night in the pub or a lunch time run, which is also coincidently most the f**king week.

Although, the sight of a red flashing light in the distance quickly stops the pain in my quads...
