Fingers

So, thanks to a gust of wind, a patch of mud and finally a tree at 25mph whilst on the bike on Saturday, I now have two broken fingers on my right hand. Apparently they are bad breaks which will require k-wire fixing or possibly pins inserting. The op is on Friday.

Anybody had anything similar, how long can I expect to be laid up, what is the long term damage likely to be.....and anybody know how to tie shoelaces with one hand...?

Thanks..

    Hi,

I came off my bike on 6th Nov and broke 3 fingers, couple of teath, graised my face and had some whiplash.

I was on the turbo by 22nd Nov and back on bike bout 11th dec.

I really struggle with writing and things like that but changing gears on the bike isn't a problem at all.

You will be back on in no time.

Thanks for the replies. From what I've read, looks like slow / careful physio is key...Suffering bike withdrawal symptoms already.. :(

Blimey, you didn't tell us about that part of the accident.

Seriously, bad luck, and I hope you recover quickly. After a hairy windy descent earlier in the year, I'm being a bit more cautious about both icy and gusty conditions. When you've only got a few square centimetres of contact with the road, the consequences of losing 50% of that contact seem out of all proportion to the hazard.

    Hi,

I had the wires removed from my fingers nearly two weeks ago...but I still only have limited movement / strength in them. More worrying is the bone in one finger has rotated slightly whilst healing which means two fingers overlap when trying to make a fist or grip things. Still doing physio but I believe another op would be needed to correct the rotation.

Anybody had any experience of this...what is the success rate likely to be...? More than anything I am worried about ever getting back on the bike..

    Thanks

Hi, Yes I have a turbo and have used it more in the last 5 weeks than in the previous 5 years (have to say thanks to Sufferfest) ...but still not the same as being outside on the bike..
