First time up Mow Cop for me on Sunday. In hindsight could have gone a bit harder at the beginning but didn't know what lay ahead.

Had a spare Sunday so I'd thought I'd give Mow Cop a go. My plan was to save a gear for the 25% section but ended up in 34x25 after about the first 100 yards and all thoughts of setting a good time went out of the window - I was just happy to make it to the top in one go! The guy in front of me was losing traction on his back wheel, he'd done a few loops at the base of the 25% section to recover so I think he might have been on a standard chainset!
Only climb I have done similar to this was Ramsbottom Rake but I'd defintely say Mow Cop is harder - I felt like I was going to have to stop rather than just wanting to stop! Nice day for it on Sunday though, rounded off the ride with a trip over to Buxton before heading back to Manchester.0 -

As I have completed this a few times (so I have something to compare it to) what makes it harder than the Rake and why?
One time I hit the rake too hard getting to it (from salford side of manchester) and suffered by the entrance on the steep bit having to pull in nearly being sick. Generally I'm blowing hard after the climb but on that day I felt ill, I dont think the few pints the night before helped.
This doesn't mean the rake is hardcore but on an off day could seem tougher than it normally is.0 -
I think the main difference is the part leading up to the 25% section is a bit longer and a bit steeper on Mow Cop than on the Rake so you're a lot closer to the limit when you get there - or at least I was! I never felt like I was actually grinding to a halt on the Rake.
I've only done each climb once but I would say both are pretty hardcore!0 -

Never been up here before but decided to give it a go today. 45 miles & 1,200m of ascent already in my legs at the bottom but gave it a good blast. The steepest bit at the top is a killer. Great climb though...

I'll give this one a bump... it'll be a few weeks before I point me bike up there though...0 -
I did it on a route during the ToB Stoke stage. GPX attached. OK not attached as no extensions appear to be allowed and Strava doesn't like non Garmin GPS! Have to take my word for it
