Pimp my lunch

Hi Gang

I need some help with some healthy options for dining al desko at work.

I make my own bread for sarnies and am slowly upping the wholemeal content.

However, whilst I take in a couple of nanas, apples and other fruit, I find that I need a couple of granola bars and a bag of baked crisps to get me through the day. I'm 6'5" with high metabolism so I have significant fueling requirements!

Does anyone have any suggestions of healthy and filling snack options (either to buy or to make myself)?

Cheers!

  • Go for nuts, not peanuts but the healthier option. I often have some alpen or something similar for lunch to fill me up. Either that or I bring something that I can heat up. If you've got the option for heating something up, go for wholemeal rice or pasta with a good healthy portion of protein and some veggies!

1, tuna with salad ,olives and olive oil
2 griddled chicken breast( jerk or cajun) with salad
3, tandoori chicken(dry spice mixed with yoghurt and marinated)guess what with it?
Prepare the night before , add grapes, beetroot, as much salad and fruit as you can etc.
Everybodies seen the people who only eat rice and chicken-why? garlic and spices dont make you fat- it doesnt have to be bland. Main things to avoid are processed i.e. anything that isnt just an ingredient- if you can make bread the rest is easy. once you start to set aside the time to prepare it youll come up with loads of ideas :)

A jacket potato has a whole lot of carbs. Have one of those with some pasta, bit of salad etc.

graze.com works for me. I order 1 box a week delivered to work and I snack on these when required.

If you sign up, use this code to get us both a little discount :)

    Thanks guys :D
  • Add some more protein to your lunch - eggs, tuna, chicken breast and as you say you have a high metabolic level you could afford to add some more fat too - healthy stuff like olive oil etc the extra protein & fat should leave you feeling fuller longer and help avoid the crisps etc. A small bowl of homemixed muesli and yoghurt is a good appetite stiller too.

I've been tempted by these before, but before I order, I wonder if you could answer a question that I can't find answered on their site.....

What is the net weight of the contents of each box?

That and presumably wouldn't it be a whole lot cheaper just to make these things up yourself? It's not that hard to buy a bag of mixed fruit and nut and put some into a tupperware box each morning :)

A quick sample of the box in front of me lists each punnet at between 30 and 40g. Obviously mini flapjacks will weight more than japanese rice crackers, but I'd imagine an average of 35g per punnet (140g per delivered box).

Perhaps, but there are over 100 different snacks on offer at Graze and to maintain stock levels at home to provide some variety would be very expensive. If you are happy enough to just have the same fruit and nuts every day then yes bulk buying will be cheaper.

Another reason I favour graze is that when I'm commuting by bike, it's one less thing to have to bring with me every day. Porters at work deliver it right to my desk.

I'm 6'3" and eat loads. I tend to constantly graze on things. I eat 4 slices of toast for breakfast, around 11 have a handful of nuts and may be some fruit (don't eat too many nuts as altho they're good for you, they're high in fat. You only need 2 Brazil nuts to get a large dose of selenium, for example, so don't plough through an entire packet). Lunch is usually as massive salad with carbs like potato or rice (home made). Afternoon I eat more fruit. At about 4 or 5 I usually have a bowl of cereal and then in the evening I have another massive salad type thing and usually porridge oats with powdered linseed, honey and low fat plain bio yoghurt....

They do, but I keep myself fairly full with a decent lunch and breakfast most of the time so this is just a filler supplement. This week for example, I have 2 boxes on the go as I had leftovers from last week. The website allows you to have preset dates for delivery but also allows you to 'push back' orders or take holidays etc with ease. As I say, It's a convenience but it works well for me.
  • Boil a few eggs and put them in the fridge. Eat one as you leave for work ( however long after breakfast that is).

I normally get up about 7 and have porridge, if I then have an egg I can go till early afternoon. With no egg I'm hungry by 10.
