Who listens to Radio 4?

As a lover of good music, I have given up on listening to music on the radio.

Most legal radio stations play the same songs again and again. 'Pop' stations play stuff I don't like, I have no idea what is in the charts and most of what I hear doesn't float my boat, 'Gold' stations play from a tiny playlist, despite having 50+ years of music to choose from.

Most pirate stations suffer from woeful standards. The DJs are more interested in hearing their own voices than playing the music.

Because of this I now listen, almost exclusively, to Radio 4.
Who's with me?
FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future
FCN 4: Planet X Schmaffenschmack 2- workhorse
FCN 9: B Twin Vitamin - winter commuter/loan bike for trainees

I'm hungry. I'm always hungry!

  • Me. Although as a middle-aged, beardy, cycling teacher, I guess I fit the demographic.

The only thing I can't stand is The Archers. I always turn over to Radio 3 when that comes on :)

There is some of the best comedy ever on Radio 4.
  • :P Superb news in a morning . plenty of in- depth & gravitas then it's over we go to radio 2 at 9.30 for ken bruce & his self deprecating humour. Recent job I was on & the younger element persecuted me with radio 1 , now I know the beeb has to cater for all tastes but it is cringe worthy , no, come to think about it's not even that good.

I grew up waking to the Today program, and the comedy shows can be great.

Not all the time, but tuning into the Today show more and occasionally catch some comedy shows. Twice in the last week I've listened to something like "Farming Weekly" pre-6am while on the turbo. Sheer WTH curiosity prevented me changing channels!

So, EKE, you need to add another section to your poll.
    FCN 2-4.

    "It stays down, Daddy."
    "Exactly."

+1 An occasional listener here too.

For some reason, I now have an image of CJ as a dairy farmer with his turbo rigged up in the milking shed

This morning's useful bit of farming information was that wool prices have been so low that they've been using the fleeces for loft insulation. This though might count as shear curiosity.

    Pluses: TMS, News, comedy
Minuses: the pious posturing on the religious programmes, the Archers

I'd listen to R3 if they banished opera in the middle of the night.

None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Yep and have done since I was about 17. Strangley all of my mates do as well. I think its due to the fact that all other stations play crap commercial music during the day, and dont even get me started on Chris Moyles!

I get a warm glow of comfort from the after-midnight, extended shipping-forecast.

    There, I've said it now.

It's the default background noise, except in the morning when we have to have R2 on. I can live with that.

BTW a huge +n where n is any number you like to Jack Dee for taking Sorry I Haven't A Clue on and making it even better than it was. He's priceless. :)

I don't. But it's not a case of "wheres the music?" I enjoy "talk radio." I've just never really tuned in to Radio 4.

I've listened to Radio 4 for as long as I can remember. On LW while abroad as a kid, and on FM now. Its the default background noise for most of the morning. It is the best source of news and current affairs in the world. And the comedy, arts and factual programming are superb. Its brilliant.

For me, websites like www.soundcloud.com and www.mixcloud.com have taken the place of listening to music on the radio.
  • The shipping forecast was my father's, and now my, bedtime story.

    I'll start: Edgeware Road.

Oh, and the shipping forecast should be taught at school - I could listen for hours.

North Utsere, South Utsere: rain, north-easterly 6 or 7 occasionally 8, clear.

  • Love the comedy on R4, but find I spend more time on R7 these days (although I need my daily dose of Pop Master on R2 in the morning!)

Radio 4 - default station, 95% of the time

Radio 7 if it gets annoying, 3% of the time

Radio 3 if I need peace and quiet, 1% of the time

Radio 5 if I need sport, 1% of the time

I listen to it for the Today programme, but that's about it, I don't get the opportunity to listen to a lot of radio and I hate the archers, it's really poor

I also get hacked off with the terrible music stations but there again I hated all the cr@p on radio 1 when I was a teenager so it's not an age thing.....

have you tried 6 music? (apart from Carys Matthews who manages to be both a rubbish presenter and have cloth ears) it's usually pretty good, decent mix of music and presenters who don't talk too much

  • There's a radio in my fettling shed that I honestly don't know how to retune - I set it to Radio 4 FM when I bought it and haven't listened to anything else since.

Actually, for all the Radio 1 bashing, its actually got some pretty decent shows on it. The Breeze Block is awesome.

I tend to use I Player to pick out the broadcasts of interest to me on radio 1 (The Essential Mix ). I still stick by what I said about Chris Moyles, and I cant help finding Zane Lowe irritating, for the good programs aired on radio 1 there is a shed load of really aweful ones.

Oh and why is Sarah Cox still allowed to broadcast?
