My (very slow) Average Speeds

My averaghe is only ever 14-16mph, but then I do ride fixie.
If I can average 15mph on a long ride (over 50miles) I'm a happy bunny.2012 Cannondale Synapse0 -

does the garming stop when you stop e.g for traffic lights
i use runkeeper for iphone, and i always seem to find that know matter how fast i seem to go, my avg speed always comes just short of 16mph, but thats going to happen as i come across quite a few junctions/traffic
it just seems that some other riders must be riding on perfectly straight roads with no turnings or traffic
If you use a cycle compture it will do the speeds for you and they normally work on either one of the wheels so if you are stopped at a light or need a break this will not effect your average speed.
Don't want to dishearten anyone, but I think a lot of people here work out average speeds based on the overall time and distance (where the time includes stops at the lights, loo etc)
For people who live in the city and it takes them a time to get out on the open road I guess they are at a disadvantage.
From what I understand - for why this speed is used in preference to average moving speed - is technically - at the lights or loo - you are actually having a rest!
I guess in the beginners section (like me!) average moving speed is probably more useful, but as you progress (and make wilder claims LOL)... it does stop people sprinting for 30m, resting 30m, etc etc and coming up with some OTT average speeds for relatively long distances.
Also if you race... I'm not aware that they stop the clock while you have a cup of tea and a slice of cake
And I should share my Road Bike runs so far. Not new to cycling... but new to road cycling...
Bristol to Westbury (Maiden Voyage)

Ashton Court Loop - 20 mile

And yes... I have only ridden the bike on three occasions.
I only got the bike in December LOLSimon0 -
don't forget the cold slows you down - I was up to 16.8 ave last summer - now down to 13.5 !
Put some top notch tyres on your bike - these will give you a buzz - and make cycling easier.
I would also up those distances quite a bit - at 4 or 5 miles you may not be going far enough to get 2nd wind - I always find the first few miles a slog - but then you adapt and it becomes enjoyable.
Keep at it - spring is nearly here now - which makes it all much more enjoyable.0
