If it works out well you could be onto something. You need a name for when it goes to mass production.

Stylish try this, grabbed a few pictures off your flickr site and put them on, hope that is ok. Really like what you have done here, very clean and can't see why this wouldn't work perfectly. Let me know how the first ride with it goes.

Cheers Scott, had no idea how to put the pictures up like that!

looking forward to my first race on it tomorrow, i think that solution is a bit neater than using the shimano direct mount fixing, had no problems when i rode round Thetford yesterday, so will report back tomorrow after the race.

fell quite chuffed with how its all gone together.

I have raced the bike a number of times and it has performed perfectly. Fast with a solid well planted feel to it. In it's winter form the bike is about 20lbs but the summer race bike will be almost 2lbs lighter.

The winter bike is my main training bike too and I get about 2-3 hours off road most days. I have really punished this bike over the last few months, infact the Skunk-Works team at On-One have asked me to push this frame beyond what is normally asked of a bike to find it's limitations. I haven't found them yet. I think I'll break before the bike does.

Well i am happy to report that the first race for me on the whippet went really well, had no problems with the bike at all, handling was spot on, felt i could really push along, it oozes confidence, rode it as hard as i could and ended up 32nd in the 2 hour race (18-39) and as anyone who has done a Thetford winter series race, they are fast and competitive, feeling very happy as i matched my best finish, on a course where a full suss would be alot better on the bumps.

need a lie down now i am knackered....................

How was the custom front chain guide. Thetford is a tough course and always so fast. Any pictures from the event. Want to see the bike in action.

VERY nice, considered replacing my frame with one of these but couldnt justify price given that its near enough the same geometry.

    Looks awesome though.

Forbsey - you're the chap who the won the 50km Spam Winter Challenge.
I was about 30mins behind you, I struggled a bit in the mud and a lack of training.

Well done - that was a pretty tough event. I guess starting at the front helped a bit though ;)

I started a bit of a trend at the SPAM winter challenge about 5 years ago by racing it on a cross bike. Since then more and more people have turned up on the skinny tyres and have dominated. This year it was time to take it back. The Whippet ruled. Mountain Bikes win again. I did however put about 40psi in the tyres and locked out the forks out road style.

  • Hey Forbsey bit off topic, but saw ur pics from Denver. I'm in Denver Co for a conference in June this year and will start our Road Trip from there. Can u recommend some good trails. Last year we came across from Moab so hit Fruita. Wud crested butte be passable 2nd week in June...?

Crested Butte is a law unto itself. Some years the snow is gone in May, other years is stays for most of the summer. Best to check the week before you go. One area to visit if you are in and around Denver is a town called Golden about 15 miles west of the city. It is a real biking town and the film American Flyers was filmed there.

From there you can ride all around the Lookout Pass and beyond into the Rockies. I use a website called Colorado Bicycle Climbs. http://rmccrides.com/ClimbDB/map_frame.html and this gives loads of really good riding in that area. Take a couple of bottle cages or a camel back as it can get really hot that time of year and also being so high the air is very dry and you can de-hydrate in no time at all.

Hope that helps and let me know how the riding goes and remember to look the other way when pulling out, gets me every time I ride in the States.

  • Hey Forbsey, thanx for the advice thats awesome, theres so much to go at over there, I'll have to be careful not to overdo it with Mayhem on the 18th...! All the best with the racing this season

  • I've put together the 'first draft', as with Scotts bike this is the winter spec.
It will be 2x10 with Stans/Hope wheels and USE post/stem in time for the first BMBS race.

As soon as people start making 1x chain guides that mount directly to the frame, im getting a whippet for sure.

Josep, i made my own, as can be seen on page 2 of this thread, but tonight i start on the mark 2 version!

had no trouble with it so far.

Scottyroyal, looks very nice, you will love it when you ride it.
  • Scottyroyal

Lovely looking bike but I'm bound to say that. How are you getting on with it? I put some frame protectors around the headstock where the cables go past as this time of year it only takes a bit of mud to start an area of rubbing.

The risers give the bike a good look too.

  • Thanks, it will be getting its first ride after work tonight, sure it will fly!

Overall very impressed with the frame, amazing quality at 3 times the price but for £400 its a steal. I was expecting the finish to perhaps be a little rough around the edges but it is flawless. Puts the big boys, Spec/Trek/Scott/cannondale to shame at this price.

Yeah, frame protectors will be going on today. Dont want to scratch the lovely paint job!
Yup, risers look good, I'm a new convert to them, much more control but I'll switch to flat with bar ends for some races, sherwood etc.

    the best bit........ :)

  • I am talking to On-One about getting some teeshirts made up with that logo on them and the 'Carbon Tha Noz' underneath. They do it in a union jack colour too, so then star looks red, White and blue. I'll let you know when they get them printed. Be nice to send one out with each frame.

  • Hi Forbsey

    Your Whippet looks awesome!
I was looking at getting a full-sus to go alongside my old hard-tail, but since seeing this I'm seriously tempted with just replacing my old bike with a carbon hard-tail instead.
I see from your posts etc that you ride both, is it worth going for a full-sus or is the carbon frame Whippet just worth going for?
Sorry for the random question, but just so impressed with the spec of this for the price!!
  • TitchEgg.

I only ride the hard tail now, and love it. The frame has loads of clearance so if you want to run a 2.3 tyre for more volume and little more give it will work. I have 100mm forks on the front and run 2.1 tyres. I also run them tubeless so the pressures are about 25psi and this gives me a better ride.

The frame itself is lovely, so stiff and light, you would not regret getting one and with the extra cash you can spend it on better components and really spec the bike up.

It is a very fast bike and is aimed at more of the racing side of the sport but will cope with anything thrown at it.

Let me know what you decide as i am always interested to hear others views and ideas.

Even though i will never go as fast as Scott on a whippet, it amazes me more every time i ride it, so far i have found it to be very stable, even though the frame is mega stiff, you dont feel it at all on the trail, it is very forgiving and when you have to pedal away from a tight turn it feels like their is nothing under you.

For the money, i really dont think you will find better, finish is good, you could build a cracking bike for alot less than buying a complete one, or just strip and rebuild one, as i did, i have even started to question when i will ride my anthem again!
