pain in the ribs area?

Hi all,

Sometimes when I do up hill intervals, I get sharp pain in the lower rib area. Most of the time they get so bad that I have to go back to cruising mode straightaway, and each breath is painful. Some riding buddies told me it's cramps in the intercostal muscles (muscles involved in inhaling and exhaling?), are they right? How do I avoid these pains?

Cheers

Sounds like a stitch to me. (your buddies could be right, that may be the technical explanation of what a stitch is) I have fond memories of running school cross-country immediately after lunch, and being in agony for the first half mile.

I had the same on thursday night; went out on the bike for a quick dash and took the route that goes immediately uphill. Must've been pushing too hard too fast cos I had a stitch for the whole of the uphill stretch. Only started to ease when I got to the downhill bit.

Don't ride too soon after eating, and warm up properly before doing something strenuous like hill reps?
