BMI Accuracy?

Ok so I am a 28 year old male, 5'10" and I currently weigh 12.5 stone (173lbs). I cycle everyday to work and back 5 days a week which is 50 miles a week at an average of 15.8mph and I do about 20 miles at the weekend.
I weight train 4 days a week, I eat quite a normal diet, usually a banana and a cereal bar for breakfast, couple of ham sandwiches with a pack of low fat crisps and maybe a lasagne for dinner, occasionally I will have a twix/mars bar in the afternoon too (average twice a week).
I always have a protein shake straight after the weight sessions.
I drink a fair bit of diet coke (never full fat and no more than 2 cans a day). I also have about 2 cups of un sweetened green tea with no milk.
Despite all this my BMI is still 26 which is technically overweight. I have the same 32-33" waist however since staring weight training I have gained 9lbs but I am much stronger now.
Is this higher BMI all down to the weights at the gym and protein powder?
Its doing my head in!

Its a guide, nothing more. You know if you could stand to lose a few pounds or not - be honest with yourself, and you'll have your answer.0

With the amount of riding etc. you do, maybe consider yourself as a 'sportsman'? The BMI index is primarily designed to take account of the average Joe and doesn't work for sportsmen - primarily because muscle weighs more than fat. See body of text at following link.
