Recovery from Flu - High HR

I had the flu pretty badly over christmas, and was off the bike for around 10 days.
I feel fine now off the bike, and started training gently again at the start of the new year but still only feel at 80% or so on the bike.
I've noticed that my HR is around 5% higher than normal when training - The last chaingang I did I was in zone 5 for most of it - Normally I would expect to be in zone 4.
I was just curious to know if this is just part of the recovery process - Should I be taking it easy or just carry on until my HR settles down ?? I definitely feel more tired than usual after a session, and my endurance seems to have gone - But other than that I feel ok..
Any thoughts much appreciated !

Hi! I had flu over the Christmas period too and gently eased my way back into things a week ago. My HR was elevated a tad. I haven't attempted to do an interval session on the turbo - that'll be this week. I did 2 hours yesterday and 3 today - mileage and power down. Have been told that if you've had 10 days off the bike - it'll take that amount of time to get to where you were before....? And not to overdo things - cell damage with flu is quite bad and if not fully recovered the virus can go to your heart. (I was told this by a GP - not a cyclist)
Hope that helps - so I guess..gently does it and listen to your body.0 -
The problem is that if you've had a significant period off the bike your fitness will be down anyway and your HR slightly up, even if the virus is gone.
Usually though I find that an elevated HR due to being off the bike for a couple of weeks gets lower again pretty quickly, even on the second or third session, but maybe that's just me. Whereas if it continues to be just as elevated after two or three sessions maybe you're not completely over the flu yet?0 -
Thanks for the replies chaps!
Symptoms are gone and managed to race yesterday and do ok, so think I'm hopefully virus free now..Just very tired afterwards and hr quite high during the race. I've managed one half baked turbo session since xmas, so I'm sure I've lost a fair amount of hard earned fitness! The annoying thing is that I was targeting the winter racing this year...
Think I'll have an easyish week and keep an eye on things...0
