You can get tights with inserts so no bib shorts underneath is necessary, or if you want you can wear unpadded tights over your padded bib shorts, space permitting .....

Just out of curiousity, why would you want to wear both?

I have bib shorts I wear in the warmer months, and bib tights I wear in the colder months

Too cold to wear just the shorts, and no padding in the running tights, having only just bought the bike im not going to bother to buy bib tights as i intend to buy a couple of prs of bib shorts seeing as tho the spring/warmer weather is not too far in the distance..

I was given the 2 prs of bib shorts from a mate of mine who is a pro mtber just so i could get started.....

Definitely wear the tights on the outside unless you want to look like superman.

The pads on your shorts should always be worn against the skin, therefore tights on top.

Have you tried wearing knee warmers with the bib shorts? An ideal and cheap solution if you don't mind having your shins/calves exposed. Everyone's different, but personally I don't feel the cold in my legs as long as my knees are covered and I'm wearing enough on top to keep my core temperature up. I was out yesterday in temperatures of 1 - 2C and a stiff headwind with this setup and I was fine.

Probably most of the people you see who you think are wearing tights under bib shorts are actually just wearing knee warmers.

    ^^^ This.

I wear same bib shorts as in the warmer months and combine them with leg-warmers.

Or full-blown leg warmers? There are times of year when I wear shorts & leg warmers to work and just the shorts back. Frankly I hate having my knees covered. Leg warmers, however, do give a bit of a Superman look and they look all the world like stay-up stockings on their own (necessary before you put the shorts on). Short of wrestling, cycling must have some of the most stupid-looking gear.

Yup - right up to the moment I walk into the office, clip-clopping on my cleats, my nads on display for everyone to see, my belly peering out of the front of my bibs, a nappy between my legs & my lid-light flashing away   :D

Fortunately, because I ride in just about every weather the Highlands has to offer, I've earned a little bit of respect so I think people cut me some slack (to my face at least....)

They should come with instructions really....

    1) Pull on shorts. With definitely, absolutely nothing underneath. Always having washed them after the last ride. Yes, you need at least 2 or 3 pairs...

    2) roll / pull up bottoms of shorts to expose bulging quads / pale skinny thighs (delete as appropriate / wishfully thought).

    3) Pull on leg/knee warmers and adjust.

    4) pull down bottoms of shorts over tops of leg/knee warmers, with sufficient overlap to stop the tops of the legwarmers escaping.

What do you do - put your shorts on then roll up the leg, put the warmers on and roll the leg down again?

    Or

    1) pull on your warmers

    2) pull on your shorts

(and anybody that puts in a step 1a) "Take a crafty peak in the mirror" needs help  )

    Or

    2) pull on your shorts
If I do that I find it difficult to get the shorts on so that they are comfortable, as the silicone grips drag on the fabric of the warmers. This tends to stretch the shorts out so that it's difficult to get the chamois sitting in the right place.

Each to their own though....

there's always a bit of adjustment a shuffling to be done whichever route you go. My warmers are quite long so I'd struggle to get them high enough if I did the post-shorts version

If you put on the warmers first, how do you do the mandatory 'prancing around in just bib shorts' stage?

Prancing around in just the warmers is just as much fun :D

Did I just write that out loud.....?

I get to do that at the end of a ride when I take the shorts off.

Given how shrivelled one's bits are at that stage and the warmers' resemblance to stockings, it's really not a state you want to be seen in...

Was going to say that this time of year cruel - arrive at the office with frozen nads and a -10C "manhood" outlined in your shorts - impressing no-one! Letting them know that you're wearing something so close to stocking as makes no difference, isn't going to help...

    Absolutely not!

It amazes me how many people do not realise this. The short manufacturers go to great lengths to make the shorts smooth with flat seams carefully designed to not be in places where they would rub, pads that form evenly around your ar$e etc and then you go and wear a rucked up pair of shreddies underneath them

Its a dear old do this Cycling lark! Having just bought a bike, I'm also faced with a bill for about £200 worth of kit by the looks of things! £50 pair of shoes, Bib Shorts at £40 a pop and then Jerseys/Jackets/Socks on top of that.

I think I'll just try leg warmers before I try anything else as I usually find my legs dont get cold (I'm often wearing shorts in the middle of winter though not necessarily to go shopping or the like!)
