First Ride of the Year

This year I am being "a massive loser" apparently. Just home from work and can't be bothered getting a shower and heading out to town, so instead I'm sitting in watching a film and being sober.

On the bright side, I won't be hungover tomorrow morning and the roads will be dead. Sounds like a good combination for a first ride of the year.

Anybody else doing the same?

Yep, no club rides on in Yorkshire land so I'm going on my own sat ride for once.

Thought I'd go have a ride up White Horse Bank I hear it's fun.

I'm sure when I get to the end I'll want to add an extra 20 miles so that's 111 on 1/1/11

Twice? Is the second bicycle different in some way?

Me too. Being a "boring b@st@rd!" and watching The Wire again. Might have a wee malt at 12 bells if I'm still up. Missed my Christmas day ride this year - today first ride since the 18th - due to the gash weather and so I'm determined to make the most of the lack of HGVs and buses tomorrow.

Nope, just two different training sessions to do! Need rest in between.
  • I've not had a drink, so I'll try and be up and off early in the morning - about 8/8.30 when it's light.
I should get out more (on the bike)

I think I've overdone it on alcohol this year. Two halves of beer in twelve months. But despite that, will be out tomorrow, especially as the forecast looks good for Devon - what better way to celebrate a new year?

I would go out on the bike later, but I have someone snoring outside my room who stayed over from the party rendering sleep impossible, so I'll be too tired to ride. Hopefully I'll get out on Sunday to start my 2011 miles.
  • Totally sober for me last night. First ride of the year already planned for today, hence the restrained drinking for new years. Heading out in a couple of hours from now.

No ride today, because.... (and I know this will not get me much sympathy)... it was too damned HOT. Temp maxxed out at about 33 deg C here, not a cloud in sky and the weather bureau folks listed the UV index as "extreme".

Spent a fair chunk of the day in the pool that is 10 feet from my back door instead! :D

Somwehat cooler tomorrow forecast, "only" about 27. Should be perfect for a ride if we get out early.

Temp is ok here, but very windy and too much sand in the air, may go out later if it clears up.
  • Just done 2hrs tempo on the turbo and now sitting with a pint of tea and a self-satisfied grin.
  • Done 27 miles in thick drizzle this morning, saw a few riders out including a group who blanked me when i raised a hand to them, perhaps its because i was on my hybrid and they thought i was an MTB rider, but glad to have kicked 2011 off with a decent ride.

I'm sober, but it feels like the Swedish House Mafia are rocking the joint in my stomach - could be messy on the bike in the middle of nowhere!

Out tomorrow, I promise... but where to?

I went to bed at 11.00 yesterday evening.

Despite mild weather and empty roads I had to confine myself to the turbo today to make sure my creaky knees were up for the first ride in about 6 weeks. :(

They were okay, so hoping to get out for a proper ride tomorrow. :)
  • My first ride of the year turned into my first temper tantrum of the year after just 2 miles. Some guy in a big BMW beeping me and trying to harass me into the gutter at a point where the single lane road narrows. And why? So he could drive 10 metres ahead of me before coming to a halt behind the too-big-to-bully red bus that was always going to stop him going anywhere. So I overtook him and unleashed a very powerful volley of original swear words with the appropriate accompanying hand signals into the driver's side window. The idiot only then went and chased me down a side road. Leading to a full-scale roadside argument.

Still, no blood was shed, and any illusions about a brand new year were instantly dispelled. It's just as bad as last year.

I suspect, though, that he won't try and bully a cyclist with a hangover again for a good while.

Had fun except it started to snow on the last, into the wind, downhill, section. Horrible pellets stinging my face. Normally can top 40mph on that particular slope but I'd be surprised if I hit 25

Still, it's good to be underway...

70 miles yesterday (3 of us) and 40 on my own the day before.
  • Done four days running and set off this morning and thought my legs were a bit tender but 40 miles later felt too cold to notice my legs and wasn't as close to home as I really wanted to be.

Still it's a bit better than hitting the turbo.
    Cheers

  • Just done 42 miles on the new Cube Agree GTC SL. First proper ride and I have no complaints, apart from cold fingers. A joy to ride with so little traffic!

Not much traffic round hereabouts this morning. Not many cyclists either :? It might be that they knew better than me when the o'cast mistiness would turn into steady rain :( Nonetheless, good to be out again; new Shutt softshell very comfortable and kept the rain at bay. Thank you Santa, aka Mrs SG.

    Best Wishes for 2011.
