Experienced Gout?

No this does mean I have been over indulging!

A week ago my joints went stiff and painfull and then a had a night of severe pain. A few days later I tried an easy 30 mins on the turbo and that night was rough again. Friday the pain was unbelievable in my legs and my ankle was swollen and red.

The blood tests are clear so the doctors think it is arthritis or gout. I am 39, 65kg so not overweight, don't drink and train regularly. I do however eat a lot of meat

I am concerned and have entered the marmotte! Anyone had experience of gout and how it affected their cycling?

    Thanks Karl.
Am trying to rest and look at diet etc.
I used to be a mtb'er and came back into cycling 4-5 years ago. Am currently doing about 5000 miles a year and have not noticed any adverse reaction to the cold before. I did start running in october to keep in shape over winter and although that was going well it did cause some pain in the legs which I put down to legs being used to cycling!

I'm always suspicious of doctors saying we have ruled out x and y so it must be z.
When you say your joints went stiff and painful - do you mean all your joints ?

I thought gout affected mostly specific joints like the toe or thumb - only because for the last week my thumb joint has been painful and I've been looking up possible causes of which gout appears to be one of many.

My brother in law suffers very badly from rheumatoid arthritis and that has affected all of his joints but I think that mostly would show up in a blood test. Again I'm not a doctor though so don't take that as gospel.

I'm assuming they've ruled out a blood clot in your lower leg ?

Hope you get it sorted - definitely get back to the doctors and keep on at them until you get a definite diagnosis.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

    Thanks Tom
The trouble started in left elbow and then it was ankles, knees , hips and elbows! After a week the ankle swelled up and was red. Some things do not seem right for me like waking in the night soaked in sweat. Anyway doctors again tomorrow.

Gout is almost always in digit joints, be it toes or fingers.

As this is not the case, it COULD be arthritis - go get a 2nd opinion or see a specialist.

    Good luck

I have have had gout before and it was isolated to my toe where it was swollen which prevented the toe from bending and also making it painful to wear shoes.
