PS3 Hell!

  • I had the dreaded YLOD on my 40GB PS3.

I heard the nightmare stories about PS sending a reconned unit so did the hairdryer trick to get it working again and then traded it in for a brand new PS3 SLIM 320GB and loads of games.

It worked out that it only cost me around £100.

It is so much better, quieter, cooler, more disk space, and no performance issues whatsoever.

    Hair dryer trick?
I have a PS3 unit sat here that doesn't turn on.. sold all the components but would like to get rid of the box.

Might take more than a hair dryer to get that one going again

The YLOD occurs because over time the poor solder mix fails. This is due to gas bubbles popping causing conduction failure.

To permanently fix the board should be reflowed. However just to get it working again quickly for a temp fix you can use a hairdryer.

I do not condone this, but I have done it to my own advantage,

Place your PS3 into a jumper and seal off all holes apart from one. Place your hairdryer into the hole and direct it into the rear vents and start blowing hot air into it. Do this for around 5 or more mins making sure that the plastic does not melt.

Wait to cool down and it should power up. Trade it in immediately!
  • will try this tomorrow

I have ylod so if it works I'll get it traded in!

If a hairdryer can melt it, then there is something seriously wrong with the solder.
