'Cello and piano. Extremely rusty at both after 20 years of not really playing them but I surprised myself and my family when I picked up my niece's 'cello and played some passable tunes at a family gathering a while back.

Possibly the most fantastic experiences of my life were when I played with my county youth orchestra. Surpasses cycling any day of the week.

Used to attempt to play the trombone years ago, but had to pack it in. Being a short@rse, my arms weren't really long enough to reach 7th position comfortably. Nobody told me about those extension pieces you can get...

Ex-girlfriend tried teaching me the piano at one time, but I'd have got more music out of it by hitting it with a sledgehammer. I suppose I'm just not one of life's musical people.

I was progressing nicely to play the Saxophone up until 3 years ago, got a few problems that I couldn't shake and suspended my lessons, temporarily until everything gets sorted.

It's a shame as I really loved playing an had progressed from squawking to actually playing enough to take my first exams.

I could read music quite well, but with a 3 years absence I'm frightened to even attempt to read now :x :(

That kind of thing, yes Mastineo. Week-long residential courses where you immerse yourselves in some great works and live, sleep and breath the music culminating in a concert at the end of the week. Needless to say that 80-90 teenagers in that environment have many raging hormones bubbling away all week too which just added to the incredible buzz and excitement. So you're working very hard, producing fantastic music and by the end of the week you know an Elgar or Shostakovich symphony inside out and get to perform it in the Royal Festival Hall or Canterbury Cathedral............ my insides go all funny just remembering it. And we were also lucky enough to go on a two-week tour of Brazil.

I had a few lessons on the recorder at primary school but was advised to give it up when I couldn't master "Three Blind Mice". I could play all the right notes, just in the wrong order.

Trombone, sax, french horn, trombone being the prefered one. Playing with the local police brass band - great fun as its a good band that get some very high profile gigs but not a competing band so everything is a bit more chilled out.

Used to compete at youth level but my parents couldn't really afford to keep sending me for lessons (they really charge the hell out of you!). Although it did get to a point where the sub-county youth band was much better than the county youth band so no one really saw the point in paying the extra "tuition" fees to play in the "higher level" county band!

Went through music college as a tuba player (actually BBb bass in brass bands). Started to play guitar after graduating (while teaching in a secondary school) and now teach guitar for a county music service.
  • I knock eight bells out of a drum in my support of Hucknall town fc, which is most welcomed by those on the pitch, but not so popular with some on the terrace.

  • I was a pro double bass player for a while but I've earned playing acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, piano and backing vocals (despite having a weak voice*). These days I find I prefer the quietness of thought to music, which is odd.

    * though I can be quite loud when someone tries to knock me off my bike....
