Breaking news. I have ridden my bike on the road.

Chorley hardly suffered the worst of the winter weather but last weekend and this weekend were my first opportunities to ride in many, many weeks.

Last weekend I didn't due to ice but today I managed a grand total of a measly 12 miles. Not firing on all cyclinders by any stretch due to winter sniffs and snorts but boy did it feel good to get out.

May even make it out again tomorrow.

Might get a whole week of 'decent' riding weather around these parts until the snow starts again!

Would have done the same if I hadn't picked up an absolute stinker of a cold. Felt it coming on Friday night just as I got home from work and now the fever is just kicking in keeping me awake. Got a vital week at work too come Monday so just gonna have to jack up on neurofen and infect everyone. Well, everyone except the person that gave it to me.

Was absolutely bouncing off the walls waiting to get on the bike this weekend too.

    Nope.

Still snow and ice around here. April maybe?
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

I have just got back and it looked like I was wearing a pair of white underpants on the outside of my tights! When I was cycling I couldn't work out what it was...turned out to be sweat that had turned to ice, yeauch.

I set off this morning, got half a mile, slid off at about 18mph. Just waiting to get kids sorted then off to hospital. REALLY banged back of head, helmet did nowt (at least I don't have to buy one as it didn't take any impact, so at least a silver lining) but wife thinks I have concussion,
Started walking back and can't believe I got as far as I did, I was like Bambi!

Just as I got back I heard another mate came off and is off to hospital for stitches.

Damn! and yet you're still posting on BR BEFORE going to hospital?!?!

    Nails or nuts?

    Glad you're okay though.

Shoot Nap, sorry to hear that.

Bobbinogs, I've had my hair do that when both skiing and mountaineering but never my shorts.
I must confess I was surprised at how much ice was still around yesterday despite 2 or 3 days of +8 ish temps. Fortunately I didn't encounter any on the roads.
Today would be an entirely different matter and I have sacked it off as a bad job.
Fortunately I have been offered a last minute reffing job so Ice Hockey here I come. At least I get a workout today.
  • I'd pencilled in today for a quick spin, but the state of the roads rounds here meant I wouldnt get out of my street.

Ive been off before on ice and it was a scary painful experience so nowadays I never risk it.

Pisses me off because Im desperate for a ride.

Note to self: avoid Holmes Chapel on ride today.

Hope you're OK Nap!! Although with your usual addled brain I don't know how the wife could tell you might have a concussion! ;)

EDIT - rear wheel started to slide out on my ride today! :? Headed for safer roads after that.

Every time I hear of another rider having an off on ice it reassures me that I made the right decision to stay in. Glad nobody is seriously hurt, coming off on ice always happens so fast, you always seem to hit the ground faster than the speed you were travelling at!
I got out yesterday for 45 miles and it knackered me! Almost 2 weeks off the bike due to bad weather and it shows.

Did 30 miles today on my old steel Claud Butler with a 28 rear tyre. First road ride in over two weeks and it was great to get out.
Had to negotiate one stretch of ice but managed to stay on the bike. It felt as though the turbo sessions had paid off though as it wasn't as tough as I'd expected.

After 10 days with just 2 outings on the MTB I've been lucky since Tuesday this week and notched up 275 miles over 5 rides :D

There was nothing on the roads on Thursday, then like some mirage I had to do an emerency stop just before a 100 m long patch of 3 inch thick ice - it was on a slight slope and must have been a spring or broken pipe, but looked like the villain out of Superman 1 had been at work :o

  • 2 1/2 hours of club ride laughably described as a gentle ride - tempo + all the way.
It was frosty overnight so wouldn't have gone on the road today even if I had planned to.
  • Very frustrating 40 mins on slippery roads. As soon as my Sunday dinner goes down I'll be popping on the turbo to finish off my 2 hour zone 2 ride. Thing is tomorrow I have a 3 1/2 hour zone 1 ride planned in so I'm hoping to do it outside and not on turbo as I had to last week!!!

  • Yesterday was 2.5 hours on damp roads. It took a while to pluck up the courage to approach them as only damps roads but it also gave a false sense of security, as this morning was a very different matter! After the first close call it was back to trying to ride in straight lines only! Hadnt realised it had dropped so low last night or I wouldnt have bothered. Spent most of this afternoon sulking!

Did 4 hours today - it was mostly fine round the dales, but there was a cold patch round Skipton and sure enough had a tumble on an icy downhill and badly bruised hip and elbow, plus scrapes to overshoe, tights and brake lever.

I suspect the winter road bike will be swapped for the MTB again next week, it's amazing how quickly the temp drops :(

  • Good lord, I enjoy riding my bike as much as anyone on here but, I'm blowed if I'm going to risk life and limb riding on surfaces that are "iffy" at best.

It's not as if I'm riding any of the spring classics or the tour next year. I do have to go and earn a living tomorrow though.

  • I was out today too and already the surfaces are beginning to fall apart.

I'm doing the Amstel Gold next year so I pretty much need every mile I can get, plus I have no excuses when it comes to conditions, I have a bike set up for every eventuality but I hate the cold with a passion.

I too have a bike for every occassion but a broken limb/joint doesn't put snap on my table, or indeed buy new bike bits.

Yeh I know, I'm scheduled for shoulder surgery this Friday, so I guess the next couple of months will be WFH & turbo sessions.

Oh and kick arse strong pain killers, Christmas should be interesting.

Confirmed concussion and whiplash. Scan wasn't bad. Feel like crap. Body very stiff and sore.
Helmet was untouched, think I caught the lower back of my head on the kerb but can't remember. Bike and cleats fine.
Mate had stitches (lfcquin on here) not from laughing at me but for trying out his new experimental 'chin brake'...

All I can say is take it easy tomorrow NapD. I suspect that you will wake up with a very sore head and neck, if not tomorrow then possibly on Tuesday.
  • Cub Xmas Lunch today, so earlyish start on very frosty roads. Thaw set in about 11.00 after which the roads were just wet, dirty & slippery. So three hours of sloooow cycling. But not as slow as the service in the restaurant :( left at 15.15 and got home in the drizzle and dark :( Mrs SG not impressed with absence of message re: delays.

Nap D, sorry to hear about the off; trust that your faculties return to normal promptly.
