7 year lull...

After years and years of being really fit, over the last year everything seems to have gone wrong.
I'm 28, I was overweight as a child but since I was around 18 i've always been around 69-73kg, depending on the time of year, and 6'1 tall. I used to pride myself that my physique was like Ivan Basso's, a bit of a mountain man. I have competed in a few sports, and always excelled, up until a year ago I liked the pain of hard sport. In my first local triathlon for example I finshed second, so was a good all round athlete.
Last summer (July 2009) I did a overseas cycle tour, pushed ourselves maybe too hard, 2000km in 9 days. I came back absolutely shattered, had a rest for a week or two, but since than i've just not enjoyed exercise/sport/fitness at all.
My weight has gone up to 82kg, I push myself to go on the Turbo trainer a couple of times a week, go out for half hearted runs and end up walking, do a 50 mile ride now and again and play a bit of squash...but its all forced. I don't know why this has happened, but I almost feel a bit embarassed, that i'm like this now.
Has anyone else just lost all motivation in the past? How have you come through the other side?
I want to get back to the 2009 me! has anyone got any hints or tips?
Many thanks, Mike.

chill, and stop eating / drinking so much so you have a chance of keeping your weight down. and Yes, but it took me from 1994 to 2005 to *return*!0

Maybe that 2000k bike ride wiped you out mate, and you just needed/still need a brake.
Just take it easy. Do what you can do. Try to quit foods with fat & avoid suger. Eat less and train more. If you cant stick with it dont worry, you can alway keep trying.
If you get too stressed phisicaly & mentaly your body might shut down.
Its all to do with Bio Chemistary. The body will shut down to protect itself. (according to my doctor)
Im sure you could loose that weight again.
Im kind of in the same boat as you.
Ive gained 2 stone since April this year & Im gutted about it, but i know i can loose it.
Ive just got to keep trying, and do what i can do.
If you dont know how to eat healthy & train healthy, then learn. Buy books. Ask your doctor for consultaion with Nutritionist.
(Low GI foods, Less Sat Fat or better still none at all, no sugary foods/drinks or alcohol)
Belive in yourself & Dont give up trying!0 -
BTW, 82kg's for someone who is 6'1, isnt heavy IMO.
Set yourself a goal & focus on it.
My goal at the moment is to reduce body fat. Simple.0 -
I did the L2P in June and felt very much like you did, but only for a few weeks, then set my sights onto a new objective and it was like a breath of fresh air, find something else to focus on and your motivation will be renewed.0

Similar vein to Velonutter...
Why are you exercising ?
- from your initial description, you don't have any specific focus, objectives, goals ?
I've seen it regularly happen with friends in my running club that they focus on doing a marathon, undertake a training program that involves planning all 7 days a week for 20weeks, they do the event and then what ? Major feeling of aimlessness, loss of focus and objectives, what they'd built their lives around for months is suddenly gone and they're rudderless.
Were you like this after your cycle tour ? What are you aiming at now ?
Solution is to pick an objective and aim at that, give you a point to aim at and a reason for exercising.
Maybe join a club or get some mates into it to and get motivation from oneanother.0 -
I find I am much more motivated when I have a goal to aim for. I've also put together my first training plan this year and i find that this has help a lot to keep me focused and to avoid missing sessions.
It's also useful to find some other people to ride with. I know ther are days when I'm laid in bed and can't be bothered but that fact i have arranged to meet some mates means I get up and make the effort, and for 99.9% of times I'm glad I did.0
