To continue the ongoing guitar outbursts happening on here I would like to nominate and get suggestions for best ever guitar riffs...

Purple Haze - Jimi
Layla - Clapton (Though I believe Duane Allman played it on t'record)
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana - Hate the overexposure but was iconic
Whiskey in the Jar - Choooooooooooooooooooon!!!
All right now - Free - Simple in essence yet still being heard and abused today!

Quite a few well known ones there, have I missed any off?

    Smoke on the Water
    Bad to the Bone

Intro to Thunderstruck, like Smoke on the water, always does it for me - spine-tingling and unique, but any idiot with a guitar (i.e. me) can play them

Maybe, but like any *simple* riff timing and 'feel' is everything, so I don't necessarily agree!

“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!
  • Search and Destroy - Iggy and the Stooges. Absolute speaker breaker.

All Day and All of the Night/You Really Got Me - The Kinks. If you don't like these songs you have no soul.

Absolutely fantastic. The first time I heard it I thought there was something wrong with my hi-fi.

Also Rebel Rebel and Stay by Bowie, 20th Century Boy by T Rex and Iggy again with I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Just off to play Raw Power!

A riff has to be carried right thro the song so I'd discount Thunderstruck. Sweet Child is good,Layla,Voodoo Chile,Back in Black,Brown Sugar. I hate Paranoid and don't think it's a good Sabbath riff compared to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Black Sabbath,Mob Rules,Neon Knights. Really AC/DC are prob. the current upholders of the riff with Metallica a close second

The intro to Kennedy by The Wedding Present.

I've heard it live so many times and when it comes on, you just know the place is going to explode. Love it. :D
