Thinking of getting a Garmin 500. I don't actually use the maps on my 705...
Would I be able to transfer routes (.tcx or .gxp) from 705 to 500, so that I could use the virtual trainer, etc?...

I don't see why not, just plug them both in to your computer and move them from one device to the other.0

Would you then be looking to sell the 705?? Nudge nudge, wink wink0

You can definitely plot routes in BikeHike and upload them to the 500 so you will be able to get your routes out of the 705 and into the 500. Don't know how it will hande the virtual trainer data though as I think the 500 converts the .tcx file into a .fit file (it does it automatically).0

Yes it does!
When the 500 was first launched the Garmin info said it didn't have virtual trainer. It's now been updated to say it does. Unfortunately a few suppliers still have the original Garmin info

Scroll down to the features, 7th point down.
Have a look here too for a discussion that confirms it http://www.mtbe.co.uk/garmin-500-question-t9756.html.
