Went out Tuesday night for an exploratory ride and the trails were rock hard. In places the snow was packed down and slippery as wet glass. The switchbacks and off-camber stuff were too sketchy for me and the woodwork - ha! - snow and ice over moss on damp timber  don't touch those brakes.

Although the snow looks pretty it's best to check anything technical for ice etc before you ride it. Binning it on the rocks is not recommended.

The forecast for the weekend is slightly warmer so expect an ocean of slush/mud if it starts to melt

    Have fun

    Welcome to the forum BTW
  • The thought of those marble rocks hidden under the snow, and resting on ice, is an interesting thought argh!!! lol

What's it like round Afan and Cwm Carn this week?
  • Went on Saturday.
Started from Brindley Heath and did the Monkey Trail first, it rode really well just some ice on the last part of Lower Cliffe where it dropped into the shade.
FTD was a different story, came off three time on the section out of the campsite. The trail was much more in and out of the shade, and hitting the pebbles was just completely unpredictable. We persisted with it down to Birches, but the thought of doing more pebbles and the rocks covered in ice was just too much and we headed up the road to the car and home.

Didn't think it seemed too bad on Saturday :|

I started from the campsite and the snow seemed crunchy and grippy at first but later on it was getting compacted on the narrower sections and I was just monging round.

Interesting to see other people's lines in the snow :)
  • ok thanks guys, think I'll give it a miss then. those pesky pebbles are slippy enough when they're wet. lol! I'm still relatively new to singletrack so I'll wait till the rain washes the ice off. :0)

You'll be waiting a long time mate :)

Give it a go - everyone else is sliding around and falling off. You can bale out anytime and fireroad it back to base.

    What doesn't kill you...etc etc
  • Did W2 in Afan on sunay for a bit of miles.

Still scary in places where it was pretty snowy, as Afan has the height, at the top was a good few inches and it was -4 down to -5.5 in that day so was icy icy cold so in the expsoed area there was some horrible cold breezes.

But the trail held well in the most and was good fun, just pray not to hit an Icy as hell root on your way down anything.
  • If you want to avoid the ice icey rocks then you could go from the campsite and do the blue route. nice and easy with nothing technical but the views will be good in the snow. Then do red after if its a decent day.

Blue route is about 7 miles. Easy but at least gets you out and about.
  • went on the chase tonight, single track was quite hard going , the ftd from the campsite was ok and the first section from swinno,s was good
  • Keep us posted guys if your off over cannock ;-) should be coming over sunday morning but if its not much good will just have a local ride kinver way!

Did the monkey today, was not too bad at all, but started to get a bit icy underneath about half way round.

Did a nice full body face plant, while I was pushing
  • did the ftd and monkey today rideable, but the uphills were quite icy and had some involuntry dismounts on the switch backs, upper and lower cliffs both icy from about halfway down, but rideable, kit bag hill was ok generally, ftd was icy in places but you could still get a move on, from wolfs drop the switch backs were a pain, but once on top it was ok

As above - not too bad under the trees but there is some serious mud/sand paste stuff out in the open where the snow has melted. Watch out for the ruts on the rollers!
  • will be over tomorrow morning with three others :) cant wait its been ages.
  • Conditions were fine yesterday. A bit boggy in one or two places and there were a few icy stretches on the lower cliff decent. My mate in front of me did a complete 180 spin on a left hander berm and ended facing back up the hill. So take care down there.

Also watch out for the deep frozen ruts on the rollers. Quite nasty on the blind side! But over all it was great to be back over there!

Was rather amuzed to see the pink bra on the start of a black section :P

After Saturday's mud-fest I went back yesterday and did a circuit from the North side taking in some off-piste stuff. Talk about night and day - the cheeky trails were bone dry under the trees and covered in a golden carpet of pine needles. Superb.
