I managed with very little and went hard - was -2c to 0c in London where i was - but it got me thinking about winter gear and wondering what most people are wearing in these temps.

What were your experiences?

What's your definition of very little?

    - bibtights
    - bibshorts on top of tights
    - socks and shoes
    - lycra overshoes (aero thin ones)
    - inner gloves and outer gloves
    - craft summer SS vest
    - sportful SS jersey
    - armwarmers
    - skullcap
    - helmet
    - shades

so i guess not that much on the upper body (ie. summer gear) or the feet. thinking i need to up it a little but i like wearing relatively little and forcing myself to go very hard to stay warm.
  • hello

I did my usual richmond park x3 ride early on Saturday a.m., plus the 20-minute ride each way from Battersea

    from top down:

a thin, tight helly hansen lifa 'beanie' that works perfectly under helmet

hh lifa crew baselayer under a stretchy, tight nylon/polyster short-sleeved top

    windproof jersey

    undershorts + tights

smartwool socks + neoprene overshoes (plus shoes, obv.)

    sealskinz all weather gloves

was just about right for a high-intensity ride, only started to get a little cold when I dropped off the effort on the ride home

    my drink froze though

That isn't a great deal of clothing, wildmoustache! In weather like this I'd be wearing two baselayers - one lighter, string vest type and a heavier weight base. Then a softshell jacket or a winter-weight long sleeve jersey with wind protection on the chest. Roubaix bibtights, Assos winter socks, Prendas overshoes, merino inner gloves and windproof outer gloves, and topped off with a woolly hat! Then again, I didn't ride this weekend as I've had flu for five days :(

    Both days:

    L/s base layer
    Thermal jacket
    Thermal gilet
    Bibshorts
    Thick tights
Two pairs of socks or one pair extra thick ones
    Shoes
    Neoprene overshoes
    Skullcap
    Two layer (Sub Zero) gloves

Could have done with some clear lens sunglasses to keep my eyes warmer but everything else was OK

  • Altura l/s base layer, pants (everyone else seems to have gone commando) Northwave thermal bib tights, Fox l/s base layer, Fox jersey, Altura Evo Night Vision water and windproof jacket, two pairs of socks and Altura thermal gloves. Set off 20 minutes before sunrise, my camelbak tube froze after two miles and my bottle of lucozade sport was a sorbet after 11 miles. My toes were frozen (might have to investigate this overshoe malarkey) but the rest of me toasty.

Some people say that I am crazy, the rest are just plain wrong.
  • Been out today around a cold Cheshire, from the top;
    -Uvex FP1 lid
    -DHB skull cap
    -Oakley Jawbones, orange lenses
    -Neckwarmer
    - Craft winter base
    - Pearl Izumi thermal shirt, gilet, jacket (PRO barrier)
    - Bio Racer Port Sunlight Wheelers windstopper
    - Assos 851 windblock tights
    - Pearl Izumi thermal bibs
    - Army issue thermal/gore tex socks
    - Castelli winter overshoes
    - Castelli winter gloves

Just right amount in a very cold Chester/Farndon/Wirral!!!
Helmand Province is such a nice place.....

buff worn as hat, fleece gloves, baselayer, thin fleece jumper, goretex jacket, fleece trousers, goretex salopettes, thick wool socks, and wellies.
That was just walking the dog, not much chance of getting out for a ride with a foot of snow all over

    -Water proof jacket

Roade for 4 hours ave temp -1 ° C...Everything was warm apart frpm my feet. Although I was wearing winter shoes, and good socks and the shoes are not too small....I feet were still frozen after 45 mins

P.s in winter I use mountainbike cleats and pedals ( metal basicaly ) I dont know if that is the cause of colder feet !!

I rode from Crystal Palace towards Kent / around Biggin Hill and back. My watch read -5 (not sure if it is reading correctly or not). I wore:

    Assos long bib
Merino long sleeve base layer (I wear my Arcteryx ice climbing base layer)
    Castelli wind-stopper
    Rapha arm warmers
Rapha merino socks (and my icebreaker thin liner socks underneath them)
    Rapha neck warmer
    gloves
    hat & helmet + shades

On a long descent at the half point, I put my Campagnolo txn light waterproof jacket on because it gets really cold going downhill with the wind factor. (I took it off when I started climbing again).

It works best with less layers. It means I am never warm but I never overheat and get too cold afterwards.

Hmm its not brave to ride under dressed, you can always take something off if warm.
It is not brave if the weather worsens when your 30 miles from home and you begin to get hyperthrmia.
I would like you to ride dressed in thin lycra over the beacons when the weather changes quickly !!
I amno sure how you feel no cold when descending if doing 35mph in -5 temp as that feels like -15. I did that recently even with a thermaljacket/windtex and my eyes were running and burning even with glasses, noserunning, even with a buff on :D
    I guess I am a pussy :D
  • Hi there.

I rode a couple of mile across Stirling to meet the triathlon club guys/girls for a run tonight. I put on a second pair of leggings over my running tights, a second jacket and a pair of mitts over my gloves for the ride. The run was great (head torch + woods + fields + deep snow == fun), and I wasn't cold a bit, despite -4c temps.

The problem came when I stopped at the end of the run, retrieved my spare clothes from someone's car and got the extra gear back on. In the 5 miinutes or so when I had my gloves off and was faffing around trying to undo frozen shoelaces etc, I completely lost all feeling in my fingers...

I had a great ride home, took some diversions to ride the cross bike off road in the snow, but still had very numb fingers 20 mins later.

When I got in the house and started to warm up, my fingers were very, very painful as the blood started to flow again...

This weather is not to be underestimated!

    Cheers, Andy

    Ha!

A cross race then. I was the same on Saturday except I had an undershirt and tights on too, but no shades...
