Well it looks very nice, but does anyone else get pissed off with brands who decide "hmm, we're good at (in this case watersports equipment) so lets branch out into something pretty much unconnected, as Joe Public is more impressed with brand image than pedigree or substance" ?

Gizza Job. I want a new bike to review. Can't afford keep changing bikes and writing my opinons on them on my own, so any help will be appreciated.

Here's an example of a couple of reviews of mine -

    Cervelo S2.

Yeah, good. Fast. Really Stiff. Pretty comfy. Looks bling. 8/10

    S2OCP.jpg

    Look 555

Yeah pretty good. Fast, stiff. Pretty comfy. Looks bling. 8/10

    WeenieLook.jpg

    Litespeed Siena

Yeah, Good. Fast, stiff. Pretty comfy. Looks quite bling if a little like a freaking gate. 8/10

    TattonLS.jpg

    Colnago C50.

Yeah, Fast, Stiff, Comfy. Looks really bling. Made in Italy so worth an extra mark for snob value. 9/10

    C506.jpg

Do I qualify? I can do it quickly using copy and paste from the following phrases -
    Light
    Aero
    Responsive
    Stiff
    Comfortable
(The last two can be combined to make 'Laterally stiff yet vertically compliant')

Actually, if you do send me a bike I will do a proper review.

I think the issue for this forum, and this section in particular, is independence.

You could have ridden a thousand different bikes, but if you deal in them it's impossible to convince everybody 100% that you're impartial.

Old-timers on here are also more than aware of the - at times risible - attempts by some bike shops and other traders to promote themselves via aliases.

Given all that, the newly-joined up NeilPryde guys have suffered as a consequence of not declaring their obvious interest right up front. Simples.

That said, I like the look of the bikes, so much so that I entered (unsuccessfully!!) the competition to have one for a year. There - I've declared my interest up-front...easy, isn't it!

  • My measly 2p's worth.

I have to say I like the design from an aesthetic point of view, and if they ride like they look, then I'm sure they ride great.

It is hliarious though when 1st time posters pop up on the forum and extoll the virtues of a great new product or company. Jokers.

Oh and CliveDS, any chance of a discount on some HED Belgium rims? :D

I have met sweatngears a couple of times and can also say that he does not work for the company. I have previously been linked to a couple of bike companies in the passed from posting favourable comments about them. I fully understand why people may jump to the conclusion that they work for the companies but some of these people are just fans trying to spread the word for good companies. We don't want to put off honest 1st time posters, I know I have got some great bargains from some of the 1st time posts.

Yeah, we know he doesn't work for the company, but we also now know the company gave him a bike for the year, free! This is what it's all about, he isn't exactly impartial. It would have been different if he had of declared this upfront.

The 2nd guy who posted is the guy who works for the company.

    @TiBoy

sweatngears is not an honest first time forum user. He has received a free bike from Neil Pryde as part of there epic rider program.

His real name is Craig Brophy and his personal website is here:

    http://sweatngears.wordpress.com/

The second reply in the forum is from a jbirnie@home.nl. This person is an employee of Neil Pryde cycles and can be found on the corporate contacts page here:

I have no doubt that the product is potentially good (although i doubt it), i and others clearly dislike this type of "hijack" marketing.

Rather than this it would make sense to order a 20% discount code and free returns to all members of the forum. As a good gesture. Personally i would also ask for my bike back from Craig Brophy as his marketing skills are clearly abysmal.

So do you have no doubt or do you have doubt? :D

I wouldn't go as far to say sweatngears marketing skills are abysmal - I'm sure they are great - he just made a mistake; and it's probably more to do with the way Neil Pryde have decided to market their bikes. It sounds good in theory, give our bikes to a few people who will tweet, blog and post about them etc. However, in practice this happens.

This forum's becoming more and more like the Daily Mail
Anyone/everyone could see right through the initial two replies but honestly, who cares? Anyone who decides to buy a 3 grand bike on the back of a review on this forum is a moron, regardless of who wrote it

I used to be sent performance tyres to comment on when I was Chairman of a large car club. Toyo sent me a set of Proxes when they were new out. They were awful and I made a point of posting this whenever they were discussed.

I didn't consider them being free as buying my approval.

If anything, people are more likely to praise something they have paid for as they don't want to appear to have been turned over. Just as people criticise products that look better than what they did buy, as their decision to choose what they bought again may look flawed.

Opinions from owners are rarely unbiased unless they come in overwhelming volume and so can be considered as fact. I am much more likely to read
mag reviews of products I am considering buying or seek to meet owners, rather than read one off owner comments.

I'd certainly buy a Ribble or even, god forbid a Trek  rather than something from a band-wagon jumping wind-surfing outfit. For a company with zero reputation in the cycling market trying to gain entry with a premium price product makes no sense in an already crowded market - suggest you go back to your marketing books boys. As for ProCycling bike reviews, I stopped taking them seriously after Robert Millar left.

Do you see Baum and Pegoretti adverts in the magazine? If not, that's why you don't see reviews. Advertisers have more say in a publication's content than you might realise.

If they make bikes that are as good as their windsurfing race rigs, they'll be good. They are one of the top premium windsurfing brands and the most expensive.

They have been into carbon manufacturing longer than most/any bike manufacturer.

According to some of the posters above, they are generic frames. The Company claim they are purpose designed in conjunction with BMW, so there's some confusion there. Personally, I think they look stunning, but I wouldn't consider buying one until I'd read some properly independent reviews from end users and had a test ride. Which stores even have them in stock?.

Oh, I've missed this thread for a while....

Firstly, to declare my "interest", I know Mike Pryde and some of the other HK based staff personally; they helped out with a charity cycling event which I ran for kids.

If it helps anyone to form an opinion regarding a purchase, the bikes were designed from scratch; they are not generic frames. I saw prototype designs during the development process. Mike and the other guys are keen cyclists and ride regularly on the HK road circuit in addition to competing in triathlons and other events in SE Asia. They have worked hard to develop the bikes and are not just a bunch of surfers who are chancing their arm in the market.

I don't own a NeilPryde bike and am in no way affiliated with the company but if it influences anyone's opinion the personnel who I know who work for them are sincere and aim to produce a quality bike. You can disagree with their somewhat clumsy marketing strategy, and it certainly seems to have p!ssed a few people off, but the bottom line is that the bike cuts the mustard. I know a couple of people who own them and they are very happy.

Great, what could have been an interesting topic has now turned shit.

I think if you guys who are affiliated with Neil Pryde had either come along and admitted you were affiliated in one way another, it would have been fine, but the fact that you came into the thread and wrote your reviews like you were writing up a press release for the bike, just made it way too easy to see through.

I don't doubt that these bikes ride wonderfully, and they don't look like they come straight out of a generic mould, but until I can read some reviews by people that have actually laid down some hard earned on it, or had the opportunity to ride one myself, I'm not particulalry interested in what you guys have to say. For all we know Neil could have sent you a shit in a box and you'd have sung its praises, you're connected to the company, and for that reason, chances are, you're gonna recommend them because you don't wanna piss the guy off, I don't blame you, if I was getting free shit I'd want it to carry on as long as possible, when the kinda bikes we're riding can easily cost in excess of £5k, it's not hard to write a gleaming review of a bike if in 18 months time you're gonna be getting a brand new one FOC.

EDIT: Nap, I am very jealous of the bikes you own/have owned in the past.

American dude, that bike with the Zipps looks absolutely killer, nice build.
