The missis is treating me this christmas to a new pair of shorts. I can basicaly get what i want, its fair to say i haven't looked anything other than Assos.

Question is, which ones????

Whats the differance between the Uno's and Mille's appart from thirty quid?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The theory goes that the Mille is a larger pad aimed at greater comfort for longer rides, I believe it also has sligtly thicker material and a more generous cut. The Uno is a slimer pad and more racing cut.

Trouble is, it's not quite as simple as that! I have tried the Mille and didn't like the larger pad, in fact found it quite uncomfortable. I absolutley love the Uno's though, fantastic quality, awesome pad and great fit (and I'm no racing snake!). I've seen similar comments on here about the mille being uncomfortable to some, but of course we are all different.

For me, I'd but the Uno's and spend some of the £30 saved on a nice tub of Assos chamois cream, it's great stuff for long rides.
  • I've got both and prefer the Mille, but really they are both excellent.

  • I've had two pairs and wouldn't buy them again. Highest prices in the market and only slightly above average quality.

Ouch, tough review! which model did you own derek? I have found the quality to be very good, my uno's have been washed dozens of times and still look A1, so surprised you have had a bad experience.

I have tried cheaper models, castelli come close but I hate my DHB's, so uncomfortable by comparison.

Got to go with Derek here. Have got some Uno's and have not noticed a especially comfortable ride. Decent yes but over priced.

It aint just about the ride, it is about rides.

    Assos keep riding. Well.

Other shorts begin look like old plastic bags.

I have both, a couple of pairs of the S5 Uno and a pair of the Mille, the Mille wins hands down.

I find both exceptionally comfortable and have never had a moments problem with either.

The S5 Uno appears to be a single pad which can be quite bulky, whereas the Mille has a smaller pad, but is then supported with some felt like material which is so much more comfy.

I have tried many of the rest and there appears for me to be nothing as good, I rode the L2P this June with the Uno and never had a moments soreness, I rode the Manchester 100 with the MIlle and was even more comfortable, so to answer the question, if money is no object then the Mille everytime, if you are wanting comfort a little cheaper then the s5 Uno

I've tried (most) other brands of shorts and nothing compares to Assos for comfort and durability.

I have both the Uno and the Mille (and the top if the range FI 13's). All are great. I like the Mille's 'cause the trim on the cuff looks nicer.

I bought some Uno's last year and whilst they were a step up from most of the other shorts I had I was surprised at just how big and bulky the pad was. It didn't look like a whole lot of thought had gone into it so not sure where the cost comes from. Bought some DHB Finchdean's in the Wiggle sale a couple of months ago and actually prefer them (pad especially) but I can see the pad stitching starting to fail which I think is a known issue so can't recommend them. From reading the posts above I'd get the Mille's if you're set on Assos.

i've got some uno ones, but don't wear them much now

they are nowhere near as good as castelli's with the px2 pad, either the body paint ones, or the free aero race ones if you prefer more traditional styling

the body paint ones are the most comfortable shorts i've ever had

My experience of Campagnolo clothing is almost entirely bad - every item has literally come apart at the seams in no time at all. If you can afford it, stick to Assos and it will last for years.

Got both. The unos are tighter or have more compression they are also slightly shorter, almost too short on me. The Milles are more generous at the front for you bits. The pad is the same on both at the back it is the front that differs. My Unos have really faded and are now dark grey but not see through yet.. Non of my other lycra has done this but its too early to say if the Milles will fade as well.

Assos and Castelli are fantastic shorts. My Milles still look brand new after 18 months of being worn and washed at least twice weekly. As do my Unos.
Recently got some Castelli Aero Race shorts in a very good sale so were about 70 quid, they are as good as the Assos to wear but obviously I have no idea how they'll last...

I have to back up most of whats already been said.
Assos is an investment. They last a lot longer than some other brands. I find that the additional comfort of Assos is really noticable after 2-3 hours. Then, they are worth every penny!
I use the Mille and the S5. As already said, the s5 is designed for 'racing' on the drops, the mille for training etc.

I thought the Mille was designed for racing and the S5 for training?

My Mille have an orange lining that is deffo not as bulky.

The other plus point about Assos is the free repair service if you damage them.

Sent my S5 back to Switzerland and two weeks later returned and impossible to tell where they had been repaired.
  • Don't Mille's have a larger read thicker more comfortable pad for higher mileage rides, not racing? I wore mine on Tour of Flanders and they were superb, would of been in agony in cheaper shorts I think.

    It's a bit confusing as there are 3 pads - the Uno_S5, the Mille_S5 and the FI.13_S5!

But they are all different (and all green these days).

Mille is for longer rides, FI.13 for racing and Uno for all round I would say.

    Another thumbs up for Uno.

I bought some DHB's last year but the quality and fit was nowhere near comparable with the Assos.

I have all three - uno, mille, f1.13.
The uno's are cut considerably shorter in the leg than the mille.
I took the mille and f1.13's on a 6 day cycle this summer, swapping turn about day to day.
Much to my surprise, I found the mille to be considerably less comfortable on a full day in the saddle than the f1.
I really wasn't expecting that. When buying again for long cycles f1's are the only ones I would consider.
For short runs the mille's are a much better fit for me - I am slightly long legged - the uno's may be a better fit for shorter limbed folks.

    It is FI (not F1)

    I have the FI13, and the Uno's.

The FI is the dogs, and the best shorts out there. Very much a race short, and super comfy.
The Uno is the "budget" pad that will do it all.
The Mille is the longer sportive pad for distance. Not got one, but supposed to be wider and more upfront for the old boy to nestle in.

To be clear, the S5 refers to the latest genre of pad which assos will be introducing into all its bibs from now on. Some of the bibs in the range still use the older S2 orange pads. Each type of bib short will have a different cut and make up using the "S5" basis.
Beware of ebay sales of bibs with the older S2 pads - likely to be well used!

You can still get selected models of the (better suited to my ar$e) S2 pad bib knickers and tights which are old stock now of course but considerably cheaper than the S5 line.

    Wonderful .....
  • @Pokerface +1, which was the OP's original question.

That said I have used my Uno for 100+ mile rides with no issues. Not tried the Mille.
  • i have two pairs of assos bib shorts both of which have the orange pad in them.
they are six years old and are used for spinning twice a week every week ,
i'm gutted because my blue pair are starting to come unstitched on the pad area and i'm loath to throw them away.
they may well be expensive to begin with but make sure whatever you do the shorts you buy are assos they truly are the daddy of cycling clothing!

After reading this thread, I think I've been convinced to get my first pair of Assos!
When people talk about the Mille being good for longer rides, how long/far defines longer rides for them?
Also the sizing...according to my height at 182cm, I should be a large but I'm normally around a medium with a 32" waist.
Like the idea of the box with wash bag etc if that's still happening.

Go by height on the Assos sizing chart.

The mille are designed for comfort over any distance, they are just not the tight race fit.
"Comfort fit" is relatively speaking, they are not exactly baggy.

Go to the Assos site and read up on them.
  • Castelli Body Paint.

Unbeatable. Although the Free Aero [one lower down the range] come pretty close, for not quite as much money...
    VO2 Max - 79 ml/kg/min
    W/kg - 4.9
  • I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it in this string but of course the fit is crucial with bib-shorts. No matter how good the quality is, if a maker's Lg is a little small for you and their XLg alittle too big then you'd be better off with lesser shorts that happen to be a perfect fit.

I just wish that Assos were a bit more consistent with their sizing - all of their bib shorts fit me well size xl. Not so with their bib longs - recently got a pair of LL.716 S5 & don't half wish I had gone for xlg. Encouraging me to watch the calories over the winter months!!
