Garmin 705 - Turbo Trainer

Hoping Father Christmas will bring me a Garmin 705 if I'm a good !!!
Most of my riding after Christmas will be on the turbo, the reseach I've done shows that if you turn the GPS off you can record all the other data, Spd Ave, Spd, Cad, HR and distance etc.
Would be good to hear from others who have 705 and are using it on a Turbo for there feedback. Certainly the feedback from others on it's merit as a GPS seem very good.
Many thanks.

I use my 705 on the turbo, and don't even bother turning the GPS off. It works fine, although it does tend to plot a route onto the map that leaps around a bit due to the poor GPS reception in my living room!
Here's an example:

I use a 705 on the turbo although I don't need the cadence/speed sensor due to the hub I use, it's great!
The customiseable display is sooper.
I turn the GPS off though just to save the battery.0 -
Yeah, use it on the turbo, running, walking whatever. Turn the GPS off, don't bother with cadence because I only want to record heart rate especially since this function has gone t*ts on my i-magic.0

same - one of the best features is being able to create custom workouts on the laptop and export them to the 705 (or do it on the unit itself) so you can easily create some pretty complex workouts and have the entire thing controlled by the Garmin.Your Past is Not Your Potential...0

Hi Bigpikle
Could you expand on that, what sort of workouts are to creating?
Are to mainly using Watts to form the workouts or HR or a combination.
How do you indicate changing gears within the workout or do you use Watts and simply change gears to achieve the the Watts required.Specialized Roubaix Elite - Ultegra Di2

Was quite funny the first time I used the 705 on the trainer, I forgot to turn the gps off, and it showed that the bike actually moved 1.7 miles in the 45 minutes that I was riding. The gps trail showed the movement being slightly side to side and slightly forwards and backwards.0

I use a 705 on my turbo. Sometimes turn GPS off, sometimes don't, it's about 4 clicks to turn it off, takes about 10 seconds. Like Graeme mine tends to jump around a bit if I forget to turn it off...

sorry - late reply...
I have been primarily creating workouts from the Carmichael Time Crunched plan, and using HR as I dont have any power measurement kit. I have a Kinetic Road Machine TT which is power calibrated to speed, so have tried a few times to train on it using speed (equated to power) as a guide but havent really cracked it yet and properly developed my knowledge of training with power.
You cant factor in changing gear and I dont bother as I simply monitor HR and cadence to make sure I am working hard enough and keeping a cadence that either suits my riding or is recommended in the TCCP - eg some he recommends are done at a slightly lower cadence etc etc.
I also believe that for 99% of us we really dont need to get too complicated and just make sure we get some good time in the right zones.Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
Right guys , I am looking to buy a cycle trainer gps with cadence and HRmonitor these days, trying to see the differences between garmin 705 and 800 . It seems that they have some limitations, such as incorrect measurements of elevation etc. Does anyone else uses a different cycle trainer or these garmin devices are the best in the market for cycling training ?
Many Thanks!0 -

Garmin 500
Does what you've asked for above (as long as you don't want maps while you ride) and it'll save you a fair bit in the pocket.0 -
All GPS type devices will not be 100% accurate for elevation, then again this bit is not of real importance to be totally honest.
Garmin's are good in that they are ANT+ compatible, so in the future if you ever got a power meter, they can record the power as well.
I have a 500 (not interested in maps), and it is a great piece of kit. When on the turbo I just keep the GPS turned on, and I have a speed/cadence sensor to record wheel speed.0 -
I have a 705 which is great, but it has to be said if I was in the market for a unit then the decision would be simple based on one question, do I need maps, or not? If I did, i'd get the 800, if not, 500. The 705 is an excellent unit but it's a few years old and I am considering upgrading to an 800 in the future. I find the maps function really useful when I'm doing rides I don't know, and if I start doing sportives in the summer which I hope to then it will be even more useful.0

I'm interested, what are you upgrading for? ie what will the 800 give you that you feel the 705 doesn't ? I've also got a 705, so am genuinely interested.0 -
I've read in reviews that the 800 has an extra screen for showing data compared to the 705, I like to have different data available depending on what i'm doing (for example, when riding hills I like to have the gradient displayed, but when I'm at home on my turbo, or riding a flat ride, this is completely useless), so it would be useful to be able to setup screens so I can display whatever i want dependant on the kind of ride i'm doing, I know it's not a deal breaker, but it's something that is useful to me.
Plus I like having latest technology, that's about it really!0 -
i would hang on as the new 800 with touch screen is coming soon, shame as i just bought a 705 about a week before i found out the new one was coming
halfords have good deals on all their garmins!
