  • Plenty of brilliant riders among this lot, but for my money, Kenny Roberts (Sr) wins it. Multiple AMA champ in the USA before he hit the GP circuit, which means dirt track as well as road race.

Best ride? Daytona, mid 70's on the new prototype OW31 Yamaha TZ750. In practice, it was noticed he came in from a test session with the fairing all scraped down one side.

Interviewer; "What happened? Did you crash anywhere?"

Roberts: "No, but this thing has so much horsepower, when I come off the banking it runs out of track. The best way to get maximum speed down the straight is to just bounce it off the wall at the top to line you up."
 The exit speed off that banking was typically 130 - 140 mph.

That same bike confused the mechanics no end, because it was geared for 205 mph down the straight, but was only hitting 195 through the trap at max revs. They finally figured out it was losing the last 10 mph in WHEELSPIN because the aerodynamics wouldn't let it go faster. Roberts commented it did seem to be going a bit sideways at times on the straights...

    This man had b@lls.

You should think about taking your bicycle to the Isle of Man during TT week.Great motorsport and cycling, highly recommended.
