Turbo trainer and a MTB

Now this might look an odd title to be posted (and I am not trolling before any one starts)
My son has a MTB. He uses a road bike at our local club and in the new year he will be getting a road bike.
He is desperate to go on my turbo, but my bike is too big. I really don't want to put his MTB on the turbo, don't think those knoblly tyres will last too long and some of you here may so good thing too.
I am trying to find a cheap option to get him on it.
Any suggestions appreciated and go and buy him a new carbon bike isn't an option.
Whilst it would be hard work do I not stress about the damage ot the tyre and jsut let him get on with it?
Would it work if I put a single geared new road wheel on the back. I know it may need some extra spacers, but should be cheaper than a new rear set up.
Would a smooth tyre of MTB width work on a turbo? Does such a tyre exist?
Thanks for looking

There are loads of smooth MTB tyres available, as many people use them for commuting. If its just an interim solution until the road bike arrives, I'd suggest popping down to the LBS and asking if they have any old ones laying about. They aren't too expensive new either.Scott Scale 20 (for xc racing)
Gary Fisher HKEK (for commuting)0 -
Yes - for a long time I used an old panaracer hi road slick MTB tyre as a trainer tyre- worked fine. On some turbos you have to add/take away a spacer to get 26 whheels to work but that shouldn't be a problem.0
