Saw him at the O2 last night.

Funny but not hilarious and a hint of racism.

Could well be a Northern/Southern humour thing (that from my wife, a Lancashire Lass) but surprised me and her. :?

Also supported by Rick Astley doing a medley of songs by the Clash, Who and Specials and no it wasn't amusingly ironic.

Racism in comedy? You sure? Oh dear, that's opened the flood gates to anything, we'll have jokes based on sex, religion, body shape and/or size, hair colour..in fact a whole list of attributes that people have no control over.

    We're doomed (Mr. Mainwaring).

    :)

  • Saw Peter Kay on one of the original set of dates for this tour atthe MEN.

It was a pretty lazy show, did he do the misheard song lyrics bit? That was rubbish, and I'm sure he's done the same thing in a previous show.

And the spade guitar at the end, that was sh1t too.

For less that we paid to see him, we saw Rhod Gilbert, Dave Gorman and Kevin Bridges shows. They were much better.
  • He's lost it. His live shows are a basic re-hash of previous material. And in fact all his material was gleaned just listening to his family chatting. Now that's dried up he's got nowhere to go.

Pheonix Nights was genius, but I suspect the real comedy was supplied by the other writers.

  • He's the stand-up version of "Do you remember when you were a kid and we had x/y/z at teatime" type shows with loads of z-list schlebs talking endless nostalgia.

Amusing at first, but quickly gets boring and eventually patronising.

I prefer something more Frankie Boyle before that also got a bit tiresome.

Maybe that's why Peter Kay was successful - he's the complete flipside of cynical, bitter, aggressive comedy which is more than an acquired taste, I guess.

Out of interest - what was the racism element?

I'm going to resort to indie-kid stereotype here and state I prefererred his earlier stuff.
  • Never found him funny. Always thought his stand up was made for people from up North to laugh at things they do on a daily basis, or for southerners to laugh at all the odd things Northerners apparently do.

"Can you remember when your mam would ask you if you wanted gravy on your sunday dinner?"

I could go down the local social club and have better crack.

Same old same old. Bought the last DVD that he did and thought it was a mistake, I thought it was a copy of the original stand up.

there's only so many time you can say "cheese......cake" not funny!
  • Was also there last night. I thought it was a tired format and ultimately resented the time it took to get there and home again for basically an hour 15 of weak material. Something surreal about watching an audience watching a guy play a shovel.
  • I saw him on the new M & S adverts. Says it all really...

you missed the bit where he then goes on to flog thousands of DVDs of rehashed old shite.

When he wanted to express something derogatory he automatically reached for the Pakistani accent and name. Don't actually think it was particularly deliberate, hence 'hint of racism'

As feltkuota put it his material was lazy and so was he. Came on at about 20.40 with an interval at 21.15 so we could go and buy more of his merchandise and then was back on 30 minutes later for another half hour. The biggest laughs were when he referenced his own old material and everyone remembered how funny he used to be.

I saw Dara O'Briain at the Hammersmith Apollo recently, second row in the middle of the stage. Now that man is comedy genius!
  • I saw Peter Kay twice before he was Sir Peter Kay when I used to go and see a lot of stand-up. The first time he was the funiest thing I ever saw, the second time he was lazy and a twat.
  • Despite this being my first post on our little online community, I couldn't help but be drawn to this thread, and thus felt compelled to post a comment. I too was at the O2 last night to see Peter Kay and actually quite enjoyed myself. I'll admit that Rick Astley as support is an illconceived attempt at comedy in itself, and that it is likely that Kay is poking fun at the aforementioned hasbeen as he attempts to rekindle what little fame he once had.

However, what I do take offence to is the prevailing strain of thought emanating through this thread which seems to be equating a personal dislike of Peter Kay and/or lack of enjoyment at his show last night, to a lack of understanding of northern culture and comedy. The vast majority of Kay's material is equally applicable to southerners, HENCE THE FACT THAT HE'S SELLING OUT THE O2 AND EVERY DATE ANNOUNCED!!!!!

There are just as many southern comics whose material lacks sufficient humour to warrant constant exposure through the BBC, but who do not come under attack by northerners claiming that it is not amusing but perhaps because they do not to understand it! Michael McKintyre is a prime example of someone who has failed to build upon the material he made it big with, and has subsequently been reduced to a frontman for BBC comedy, despite the fact that he is becoming less funny. Also, as a northerner myslef I can confirm that the constant repetition that northerners eat nothing but chips and gravy is nothing but utter rubbish which does nothing but make the accuser seem moronic.

If you don't like Peter Kay, or you did, but you didn't enjoy his show, fine. But simply suggesting that you don't like it because its northern and you don't quite "get it" does nothing but re-affirm my speedy realisation that 90% of the individuals on this site are nothing more than ignorant, self-regarding cretins, driven by the delusion that their opinions are somehow gospel when in reality it it is nothing more than ill-informed drivel. Now...anyone fancy talking about cycling?

Do you find the chip on your shoulder unbalances you when cornering on descents?
  • Wonderful!! You've managed to raise the level of comedy on this thread to that of Peter Kay!! Next stop...a regular slot on Mock the Week :D
  • Booney - I disagree. I think Michael Macintyre is still on the way up, and does seem to have a reasonable amount of fresh material - despite not liking him much to begin with.

Perhaps we will be saying the same thing about MM in 5 years. Also, you can't say Peter Kaye doesn't play on his Northern roots...

I thought people were saying they'd heard it before, not that they don't get it.
