The problem is getting to try one in my size seems impossible and am thinking of either waiting until I can afford to buy a new frame, fork and wheels and tranferring the decent bits from my current hardtail 29er or importing one myself or possibly buying a second hand one that's available. The problem with the second hand one is that it has 100mm (Fox) forks (ideally I'd want 120mm as I can always reduce the travel but not the other way around) and XT 9 speed (I have XTR 9 speed so would just swap these over) but if the price is right it might be worth compromising.
I live in South Manchester but have family in N Wales and they're not that far away so thought I might start trying some of the routes before long though I might need to get a GPS first.Santa Cruz Tallboy0 -
You are more than welcome to try my RIP when I get it built, it will be a medium. Failing that Stif have a large demo RIP, and a Tallboy. They have a marked demo trail out the back of their new shop up near Harrogate. Its a bit of a trek but well worth it if you are willing to spend big bucks on a frame.
Catch up with us on www.mtbplanet.com if you want to join us on rides around North wales and the North West.
I take it the 29er you have is the Kona listed in your sig?Niner Air 9 Rigid

Harrogate isn't too far away. I would need an XL Tallboy and probably XL RIP 9.
I'll check the site out. At them moment I'm trying to improve my fitness and skill levels but have done enough to know I like it and whenever I ride with the group 90% are full suspension and I find the rough off trail XC stuff hard going on the longer rides. Also I feel my large 20" 29er is a little small despite the layback post and 120 mm stem (an XXL tallboy might even be ok). These kind of bikes are a bit OTT for me really but there isn't the same choice as with 26ers and I'd sooner get a really nice bike that I love to ride and will keep a while.
With regards the second hand tallboy, it's 100mm travel and I'd ideally spec 120mm (just because if I don't need 120 I can reduce the travel but not the other way around) and it has 9 speed XT drivetrain whereas I have XTR. This wouldn't matter if I keep mine but if I sell mine then I wonder whether I'd be best just buying a frame, forks and wheels and using everything else from mine. Decisions decisions!
Thanks for the offer of a trial. I think I would feel more comfortable with a demo bike rather than your pride and joy though.Santa Cruz Tallboy0 -
Well, the new bars have arrived. I had to buy new ones because the old ones were slightly damaged where the brake and shifter clamps sit.
The new ones are Salsa Pro Moto XC Low rise with a 10 deg back sweep. Realy light with a nice carbon weave look.
Pics are a bit dark.
The clamp area has a rough area to give some grip in the clamp.
They arrived from wiggle in a box big enough for a pair of wheels, loonies! ;DNiner Air 9 Rigid

Tasty looking bars! Interesting to hear about the shipping box being that big, but as long as they paid for that size box and not you, who cares haha. If you need to ship some wheels, your set!0

I opted for the free postage so luckily I didnt fork out for it. the box will come in handy to store all my build parts while I wait for the forks to arrive.Niner Air 9 Rigid

Boredom has set in, just started putting random bits of the build together and I think this looks sweet 8-) 8-)
Just waiting for the XO gripshift to arrive now, no hope of that soon in this weather. :-/Niner Air 9 Rigid

We-hey, my gripshift arrived in the post this morning so I have been sat here supping some stella and fettling with my build.
Generally with a gripshift you have to use a shortened grip of about 90mm so I set about my existing white peaty grips with a stanley knife and a hacksaw, probably not the best thing to be doing after a few cans of stella but I'm still alive to tell the tail ;D ;D
I wanted to keep the white lock on grips to go with the white of the rims and saddle. They dont do a set of white 90mm lockons so I had to take drastic measures!
Here is the result.
I'm quite looking forward to trying out the gripshifts for the first time.
What do you think?Niner Air 9 Rigid
Whyte 129S 29er.0 -
Well, I ditched the white grips and went for the propper 90mm ODI's, must say they look much better and will go with the rest of the gold colour scheeme.

Well, as this build drags on while waiting for the forks it gives me too much time on my hands to pimp it up.
In the above pic the collars on the grips are gold, I have just ordered some white superstar lock on collars to try on for size to keep it in with the white rims and white saddle.
The frame itself has some rather nice red pivot caps
So I thought I would try an add a bit more red in a subtle way so am looking into oredering some red anno bolts for the brake calipers and mounts.
Keeping in the red theme some red carbon headset spacers.
When you start digging for bling bits on the net its amazing what you find ;DNiner Air 9 Rigid

Had a couple of minor changes this weekend.
Thought there was too much gold up front so swapped the gold grip collars for white.
From this.....
To this ......
I felt like I had to weigh out the white a little, rims and saddle are white and it needed some up front.
Changed the saddle from a white SDG Bel Air to a white Charge Spoon.
This pics a bit busy but it gives you an idea of the white lock on collars with the rims and saddle.
Just got myself a black Middleburn 42T outer chainring to put on. Just waiting for the red Middleburn chainring bolts to arrive 8-)
Pics of that when its thrown together in the week.
Not long on the forks now. begining of Feb, I Hope :-/Niner Air 9 Rigid

Cheers for the replies. I put the bike on my daughters bed to get the pics.
I had no choice to go for the white forks, that is another story, one that I'm not very happy about and i think I have been well and truly mugged off by Mojo.
A few more pics, Keith the cat decided he wanted in on the photos
