Hi Guys/Gals

Just bought myself a Planet x Carbon SL, hoping for delivery this week,
Previously only used a Mountain bike to commute and do some road riding(Not on knobblies).
Anyway, looking to up my fitness over the winter and would like to get a Turbo for in the garage.
I might point out I love gadgets and Tech stuff but am unsure about the TAXC systems against Dvd training guides for a more interactive training fix.
Or should I just buy a HRM and an IPOD. I would like to be able to measure my haert rate etc and all the other useful data so I can log my fitness improvemnts / downfalls,
Just wondered how other people do it as totally new to cycling for fitness,
Budget about £500 in total. I will sneak pedals and shoes under the wifes Radar.
Any help much appreciated.

  • Buy the best you can,

Many Years ago I bought the Real Axiom Virtual Trainer - It was very expensive for me and I was very anxious about it (£500+).

But five years later - I am still using it and if it goes wrong etc I will replace it straight away. The simulations and the recorded and live results give you something to work against and give you good information while you are training.

Buy something cheap and you may regret it if it doesn't help you stay motivated - but that's a lot about your own motivation.

Look at the cost over several years - The Elite RealTour Elastogel Turbo Trainer is £450.00 from Wiggle at the moment but will need a PC

Maybe be this would be good option as it just comes into your budget zone!!!

    Good luck.

I had the same price point as you and I just got a year old Tacx Fortius and then had to get the new TTS3 software. All in £460. Its very good, but the software has some bugs.

I was after a Tacx as my friend had one and we plan to race each other virtually.

I did a bit of research looking around for them new and second hand. If you want a Power meter, the Tacx Flow can be had for £250 from Decathlon. This doesn't show up in any Google etc search because of the way it is written.

The best value for around £500 cheapest I found was not in the UK at all. The iMagic which controls th software the same as the Fortius can be had for a staggering €399 for www.bike24.com; there's only a €5.95 charge for a bulky item, the postage is free o the UK. You can get the system, tyre and a couple of vids for what you are thiking about.

One thing though, if you buy either an iMagic or Forius make sure its sent with the latest TTS3 software, otherwise it will cost you €45 to upgrade if it is shipped with the TTS2; or if you are really unlucky and it a reseller with old stock you may get the very old Fortius 2.02 software and that will cost you €99 to upgrade.
