The Moviestar Pro Team will debut their new electronic shifting system next year.

When asked why it has taken so long to get it ready, Campag had this to say:

"Our system is different to Shimano's. Their one is ten-speed, while ours is 11-speed."

The battery looks like it came out of a small truck!

    Very cool :)

I still can't justify the expense though - I'm trying to get my wife to understand the need for a Winter bike :(

Actually, how many gears is too many? Presumably 13 speed is the limit as then you'd have every possible gear from 11-23...

It's getting like the luxury car manufacturers doing 6, 7 and now 8 speed automatic gearboxes..

Campag had electronic gears in the peleton before Shimano, but it went very quiet for a couple of years.

I was beginning to think they had dropped the idea. I believe the battery is built in to the bottle cage.

Decidedly odd that the the launch of Campagnolo's newest statement product, they display it on a bike with..... Mavic wheels.

Presumably it's a team issue bike.

If Mavic have the contract to supply the wheels they wouldn't be too happy to see another brand on the display machine.

I think the article says it's an official Giro bike, as Pinarello are supplying them for the next three years, so presumably Mavic are the official wheels.

I think Mavic had some sort of electronic shifting system before both of them?

Can't remember which team(s) used them, but it was before Shimano had even announced theirs.

    So how long before...

... there's an App for it?

... and there are accusations of electronic sabotage during races?

    Sachs had one before Mavic.
    1994...
Sachs introduces Speedtronic, the first electronic shifting system.

    So, SRAM got there first.

Dunno why they don't integrate the battery into the seat tube (user removeable), with perhaps a hole/rubber bung for charging connector. Will look for nice than a ugly battery bolted onto the frame. Not often you need to remove it, when when you do (say when lithium battery starts to die)
    Say... That's a nice bike..

If you can go back to www.campyonly .com they ran the development of the Campag. electronic shifting as it happened. It was already to go and had been trialled thro. numerous races but it got shelved for whatever reason. Below pic is from 2003!

  • I just don't understand the fuss over electronic shifting. Other than as another way to prize a grand or more from us.

+1 Cables are fine to me.

Plus I consider electronic shifting akin to witch craft.

why not a 10-30 cassette - 21 rear cogs? why limit it to 11-23?

You'd get a massive overlap between rings at the front with 11-30 surely?

Unless you got enough of a range to do away with gears on the front. But I guess chain length going between 11 and 40 would be an issue even if you did save the weight of the mech, the other ring, the shifter and a cable.

  • I know this has been debated many times before, and I don't mean to start a fight, but when Campagnolo abbreviates its name as "Campy", why not defer to them? Mad4Campy, Campy Lab Tech, etc. http://www.campagnolo.com/jsp/en/index/index.jsp

    Just curious.

It's seen as an Americanism (which I believe it is) and therefore feared. FWIW I use "Campy" on US forums and "Campag" on here for the sake of conformity. :)

Oh, and pronouncing it "Campag" makes very little sense anyway since the 'g' is effectively silent in "Campagnolo."

Obviously what the market will bear. How much is Di2? It won't be less than that. In fact, Vicenza will prob. want to charge more as it will be at the level of Super Record 11 speed to start with. Plus added cf and Ti and a premium because it's extra 'special'

Interesting to note the battery is not part of the cage and is now v.similar in shape to Shimano's. It was originally (2003) more minipump style. I wonder if it's the same supplier/voltage and interchangeable with Shimano in the manner of laptop power supplies etc.

More than most of us would pay initially.

But that was the same of most new developments, integrated shifters, carbon frames, even cotterless chainsets when they first appeared. But as production gets into flow, R&D costs are recouped and the product drops down the groupset range prices will come to levels that are affordable to all.

There is nothing in electronic shifters and gears that use exotic high tech materials or need specialised skills to manufacture and assemble them. In fact a shifter containing a switch and a wire should be far simpler than the mechanical ones we now use.
