I think you will find compared to american sports our soccer players are worth peanuts,

and I dont like to defend them really cos I dont think they are worth it - but I also dont think Tom Cruise is worth $25M for 6 weeks work - or the fact Bono moves all his business away from Ireland to save tax, or that City hedge fund bankers can make £250K a day ....

    its all relative

Of course the salaries for sports and movie stars are ridiculous, but I guess it comes down to what money they bring in. Cruise's films for example will usually do very well at the Box Office and the studios will get back huge profits on top of the $25M salary/cost of films.

Same goes for sports stars such as footballers, tennis players etc. Federer or Nadal for example may win £1M for a Grand Slam, but they bring in far more than that in ticket sales. Whatever millions they get from sponsors, Nike, Gillette, Wilson etc aren't even close to the money they generate.

I think in Sampras's career he earned around $150m in prize money and god knows how much more in sponsorship. And even then it doesn't scratch the surface of what profit companies got off the back of him.

It's insane but theres no point in comparing it to people like doctors, surgeons etc because it's totally irrelevant.

I also think it a little unfair on sportsmen...to expect them to be role models for young adults....

imagine a paralell universe where pickyourfavouritefootballer had no footballing talent...

how would these guys do in the real world? Well educated? Good Jobs?

Now expect them to be good role models.....it doesn't work.

I reckon most guys in their early 20's with loads of cash...some fame...an inflated sense of their value (not just self inflated...they will constantly get compliments which would not be given to less worthy folks...) and plenty of free time....would get upto all sorts.

I don't really understand why some people expect more. Ultimately...these guys are good at football. they should not be held up as role models for kids...unless they happen to be good role models...im thinking about players like michael owen...only ever read about football, good sportsmanship and positive stuff...i have never even heard anyone talk badly about him!

Fair point. I don''t think it's so much that they are "held up" as role models it's just that by virtue of what they do they ARE role models, like it or not. There's an expectation, rightly or wrongly, that they should rise to this.

If a kid has a clear idiot as a role model then that's the kid's problem to be honest.

I was discerning enough to not have loser role models even as a little kid.

    Who here's had a loser for a role-model? Mmm?

I'm with the OP, the bloke is a real dick.

Kids/ teenagers all around the UK are going to be looking up to him as a role model.

He shagged a couple of prostitutes whilst his wife was pregnant. It's been all over the papers and now he lands a contract worth a fortune.

Now I do agree that peoples private life is just that. But, if your going to be a role model and make a fortune off the back of it then you should behave accordingly.

Peter Reid got it right, footballers/pop stars/actors aren't role models......parents are.

Indeed, and any decent parent will instill in their kids that Rooney et al are the last people they should be looking up to as role models!

I had Inspector Clouseau as a role model.

Very true, I've lost count the number of times watching a game on tv when a player taking a throw-in has opposition fans behind him and you can see what is probably a 10-11yr old flicking v-signs and mouthing abuse with Dad alongside him doing exactly the same! I've always loved playing and to a lesser extent watching football but I despair at some of the idiots it attracts.

To be fair to the wee fella above, a 10-0 defeat would bring the worst out in event the mildest of souls.

The pic is at least 5 years old so unless they got battered back then too he can't use that as an excuse  10-0 I would be off work for a week
