Visiting Messina in Sicily maybe then, a little nod to Nibali's achievements perhaps.

No. It's commemorating the 150th aniversary of the unification of Italy which was partly brought about by Garibaldi's campaign which started in Sicilly

The race visits several key places, I believe.

  • It's amazing how almost every year the course passes up the east coast near the venue of the Nove Colli granfondo a day or two prior to that Sunday event. You'd think there was money changing hands to get this extra draw.

I'll have a bit of that.
  • The Grossglockner is immense. We went up there on a childhood holiday in a car in August and turned back due to bad weather. The first pass I ever went up, I think. A really awe inspiring piece of road.

Wasn't familiar with the climb so just looked it up on Climb By Bike. Not sure which route they are taking but about 20km+ and over 8% average.

Oh right I didn't know the route was partly due to that, interesting and you learn something new everyday eh.

Looks like Alpe d'Huez on the menu for the Giro in 2012

Which will be nice. And a good reason to do it too.

A nation united by a biscuit. That's my kind of place.

  • Any ideas when the DVD of this year's race will be released? I want that memento of a great race

Unlike France - a nation divided by cheese.

Unfortunately there will be no Giro 2010 DVD (at least according to Bromley Video and the Cycling Weekly shop). However if you use cyclingtorrent.net somebody has put together a very good highlights package using Eurosport footage that you can download if you have a fast enough connection (it's about 5 DVDs worth)!

Basso isnt there... Nibs in the limelight... I wonder is this a signal that Basso will skip the Giro in favour of the Tour and Nibs will go for the Giro and help Basso in the Tour

I think that's the plan, sort of anyway. I think Basso will do the Giro but not to win. Next years Tour is potentially a good course for him.

RCS/ RAI Trade in Italy offered a DVD of the 2010 Giro sold in Italy along with La Gazzetta dello Sport as part of their Hall of Fame DVD collection for 2010. Amazingly, there's an ENGLISH commentary soundtrack on it! This may be why Bromley/WCP do not have DVDs of the event though RAI Trade/RCS have done a poor job of making the DVD available outside of Italy. I brought one home, not knowing for sure if it would play on any of the players we have here but luckily for me it does play just fine on one of them. I'll be heading to Italia next month and will try to pick up any copies of this I can find. They're cheap enough, less than $20 US so I'll get as many as I can find as I've heard others lamenting the lack of video record of what was surely the most exciting of the 2010 Grand Tours.
