Anybody think this possibly was all one big United wind-up in a bid to unsettle opponents?

No, or if it was it might have backfired.

The incident outside Rooney's home came after his team-mate Patrice Evra said that the striker should be frozen out at United over his public declaration that the club have not signed players who can make them competitive. Evra said: "If one player does not trust the other players, that player should not play. I am not like that as I trust everyone and I know we can win."

    £180,000 a week apparantly.

    Doubled his salary right?

Given Evra's role in the French world cup debacle, and, well, his Frenchness, that's not particularly surprising.

Me neither, but a few on Facebook are coming up with conspiracies already. The money in the game is creating monsters!

Yep, get him under a new contract and make his transfer fee worth more then list him for being a prat  I can't see how his teammates are going to take to playing with him when he has more or less said they aren''t good enough for him!

Yeah I find it amusing how many fans think this means anything, contracts in football mean very little...all it does is protect his transfer value for the club.

As for the conspiracy stuff..why would one of your top players threatening to leave unsettle opponents? I really don't see how that connection can be made. United's biggest issue is that they can't seem to be able to hold onto leads like they should.

I am simply astounded by the whole thing. Surely he cannot expect to carry on regardless now? This has to be about the club and that idiot agreeing to a contract renewal to push the price up after he decided he was offski? Either way, he has to go. I'm taking his posters off my bedroom wall in protest :)

    True.

    But he wasn't wrong though.

No he wasn't, but this being the main (only?) thrust of his justification for demanding to leave, he now looks like even more of a grasping mercenary.

"The club don't match my ambitions...oh, what's that you say? £180k a week?...The club now match my ambitions!" Wayne, this isn't going to help your cash strapped club get better players in.

3/4 of a billion in debt and paying 180 grand a week to a player who may well have peaked under the pressure.

    The buffers are getting closer.

  • Watch the interview of Rooney on Man utd TV again...every time he makes a statement about his future/contract at Man utd etc etc he looks down to his left...this is clear body language he is lying.

As one previous poster has already has stated this "new contract" is a way Man utd can protect an asset and Rooney will be sold within the next year or so for a huge amount of money (well far more than £5 million!).

My view is that Rooney has done a deal with Man utd (remember Ronaldo) to stay at the club in the short term (get a big pay rise) and then leave later on.....everyone is a winner! Man utd sell their prize asset for much more than they would have, Wayne gets a pay rise and out of man utd, colleen gets her man out of man utd etc etc...Do you think Sir Alex would let this lad rule the roost? Remember Keane, Stam, Van Nistelrooy et al.

Remember we are simply talking about a business...football at the top level stopped being about Football many years ago.
  • ..football at the top level stopped being about Football many years ago.

Have to agree with that. Ferguson said this week he had "requested an interview" with rooney through his agent. I couldnt imagine shankly, clough or busby being so gay.

Yes destroyed. The game is riddled with money grabbing little bastards like rooney, the clubs are no longer clubs but plc's. If you think that £180,000 a week is not obscene that you live on a different fucking planet from me. You sir are the one talking sh1t and sound like a typical head up your arse football "fan".

Well it's difficult to argue against Rooney being a complete turd but all the changes in football over the last 20yrs have been effectively blessed by the fans because they keep on turning up to watch and paying to watch at home too. I agree it is silly money for what they do but as long as it's not my money that is paying for it then I accept that is how things are, no one is being forced to do anything they don't want.

I can hardly sit through a full game now due to the blatant play-acting that is so prevalent, life is far too short to waste time watching someone pretend, often very badly, they've been kicked. Now that is something worth getting annoyed about. Like another poster said on here somewhere, local football is much more enjoyable to watch these days.

I could get used to being called Sir...

I agree that £180,000 a week is obscene, but you cannot blame the state of modern professional football as a whole on the bigger clubs becoming public limited companies. There are FAR FAR worse things going on in modern day professional football than this.

    Just sayin...

By the way, I take back the agression in my original reply; it was uncalled for.

The rumour around Manchester - and without sounding like one of those guys around the pub, my boss is well connected with Man U - is as follows:

Colleen basically found out that a few ppl at Man Utd knew about Wayne's hotel antics and basically covered it up - this included a cpl of the players and WAG's and also someone on the management side.

She blew up about this and basically said its the club or her - so Wayne put in a transfer request, Fergie told him to bugger off - his agent is now doing everything he can to sort this for the scouse cpl and his bank balance.

The issue of course is the Glazer's will now suck any transfer fee into debt interest repayments just like they did with the Ronaldo money - Fergie will retire knowing he is hamstrung by the debt and inability to rebuild a squad and as much as i hate to say it then Utd could find themselves in a Liverpool situation, no champs league, fan's rebelling, club lost direction, languishing near the bottom of league and haemorrhaging cash .

I hope this happens as I think it may be the only way to get rid of these yank con men. Since the Glazers took over I haven't been to a game or bought any merchandise. What the club needs is bloody good fans revolt. Don't see the point of the green and gold campaign when fans are still going to games and still lining the pockets of the yank leeches.

    Why footballers?

Doped up rock stars and egotistical actors have been earning that sort of money for decades. No one ever complains about how many millions Dylan and co have salted away. At least footballers don't pretend to be trying to change the world for the better while making sure they don't lose any of their own cash.

You may be interested to know (I have this from a reliable source) that Fergie's replacement will have £150m to spend on strengthening the squad.

It all boils down to 'public demand' as long as 'we' are prepared to buy season tickets at obscene prices, or part with our cash to buy an artist's merchandise they will continue to reap the rewards, wouldn't go amiss if every now and again a football match or rock/pop event was staged with free admission.
As annoying as it is, you can't blame the individuals for 'milking' as much as they can.
