How often do you get punctures?

I am shooting myself in the foot here... in fact I'm not feeling well so far into this post.

BUT, how often do you get punctures and what tires do you use? I got an Allez '16 recently and have done almost 500kms on it without any problems, ahem, in that area - about which I am quite surprised. I've had a MTB before and as I recall punctures were more frequent until I got some puncture resistant tires. Are punctures less frequent with road bikes/thinner tires?

Of course, on my next outing I will regret making this thread...

  • The thinner the tyre, the less of it is in contact with the road and the less chance of punctures.

Tyre pressure makes a difference too.

Since I got armadillos on my road bike I had no punctures whatsoever (before that it used to be once a week almost). With Schwalbe Marathons on my cruiser I had none yet (just 2 weeks). I do no less then 100 miles a week.
  • Marathon Plus rear, Durano Plus front, both 25mm - 4500 miles, no p*nctures.

    This year, so far.....

500 miles on Durano Plus' and no punctures; 3000 miles on GP4000S's and approximately one every two weeks; 2000 miles on Durano S's and only one so far (in a bloody triathlon transition).

In conclusion, Schwalbe are in in league with the Devil.

Good thinking! I have had less than one since switching to puncture resistant tyres (24C twin rail couriers Berlin edition)
FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
    Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

    how's the grip?
  • As folks have said, this is tempting fate.

    But since
    1)putting decent inner tubes, schwalbes.
2)Getting a good rim tape fitted
    and then
    3) Using armadildo's (specially for all you Porridge fans)

    No probs - ppsssssssttttt

I had 5 in 5 days a few weeks ago, at least 4 of which were unrelated (jury's out on the other). But before then I'd been super-lucky over a period of years.

Even though I have not had much bad luck with the Mondos, I'm looking at getting either Durano Plus or some Halo Twin Rail Courier or Berlin.

Very good, I've had only one 'whoops' nanosecond but that was going at full chat, banked over, in the rain and hitting a cast iron manhole cover with the front wheel. Stayed on but did have to check my underwear when I got home. Don't think anything would grip in those circumstances!

  • I'm probably running at a rate of 1 per 1500 miles at the moment. They usually coincide with unusually high tides on Portobello prom washing all kinds of crap into my path.

Edit: Vittoria Rubino Pro - when you absolutely, positively have to scalp every motherfu... on your commute, accept no substitute.
  • commute hack runs 38mm M+ tires which cope with broken glass etc, did manage to hit a screw dead on about two years ago which punctured, but none since.

i did manage to pick up a puncture in RP when they where resurfacing. But that was the roadie.

You crazy fool... I would be worried if I lean more than one degree in the wet.

BTW - I just went to a shop and on the way there is a short "park path" I have to take. It was covered in leaves and when i was about to stop for the stairs, I hear d a hissing.

it was a leaf that got caught by the rear brake calliper.
  • One so far today - but there's still 19 miles for that to change...

I've done 3,500 miles on some Armadillos with none. Then changed to Gatorskins and this is my second in a little over 2,000 miles - both caused by very fine flint shards.

I've got Kenda Kriterions on my road bike and I've only had one punct**e in 1,500 miles and that was a pinch puncture... at 110 PSI!

The MTB, in contrast, punct**res if I ride within two feet of something pointy...

Never had a puncture as I use Specialised All Condition Pros 23 and 25C on my everyday bike. Sometimes I use a 28C Armadillo All Condition on the rear when carrying heavy loads (28C is on the winter wheel). I had an explosion about 3 year ago on a Trek road bike when the rear Bontrager Race Select tyre blew on a long sunday ride 37 miles from home. It was simply worn out right down to the belt and really sqared off and had failed when I rode over some grit in the road which normally wouldn't have troubled a tyre in good condition. ICBA to change it so it cost me a tube as well. Now have Vittoria Rubino Pros on the road bike and not a single flat in this time. Tyre pressure is 130psi. Grip is excellent.

  • Just had five across a two week period, which was somewhat frustrating. Most of them occurred rim side and I have since bought some nice, thick rim tape followed by a set of Gatorskin 700 x 25s and I expect never to have a puncture ever again.

The tube got punctured by the rim? :S

... and if you want no punctures, get Marathons Plus! :P

you can get nails sometimes though

Seemingly so. Very weird eh? I was using basic Specialized tubes and remember hitting some quite severe potholes on each occasion, but even then, the punctures were pin pricks and not pinches.

The tubes MUST have been about 50 years old at least for that to happen... odd.
