Ok its a long shot, but a very good friend of me who puts the hours in on the bike has had the following experience.
After a summer spent in the alps climbing 1500metres most days interspersed with a few weeks in the uk he started getting a bad cramp feeling in the thighs. over a period of a week he was getting thigh cramp immediately on getting on the bike.
Its effectively got worse, and he now finds it difficult to walk.

GP was no good and today he went for an MRS scan. the consultant thinks it may be aggrevation of the the nerves in the L3 L4 region. more analysis later.

on this basis has anyone experienced a similar condition ? what was the outcome ?

  • No idea what it could be - sounds scary tho'. Did meet a chap in France who's been stung by a hornet on his back and the inflammation caused led to him needing crutches to walk - even several years afterwards. He could still ride a bike tho' - don't really understand why ... rubbish at French! Hope your mate gets a diagnosis adn necessary treatment soon.

I had this - very scary. Came from no where in June sometime - within a mile or so both quads wound up and forced me off the bike. Went to sports physio who took one look at my posture and said it was nerve related - the curve at the base of my spine was too much

Anyway one session of 'manipulation' and a bit of ultrasound and its been fine ever since - although waling back to the car from the session it flared up but hasnt since. I have had workstation changed at work - lumbar support is key as are some excercises to stretch and prevent stooping (ive always had bad posture - it all adds up)

Get some physio would be first advice
What do you mean I\'m in the wrong gear?

I had something similar to this in my forearms a few years ago.
After 25 years sedentary work I volunteered to refurbish a friends house and got stuck in as I used to in my youth. Within a couple of months I had forearms like Popeye and regularly had excruitiating pain deep in the forearm muscles which rendered my arms useless.

I think the cause was developing the muscles at too fast a rate without the body being able to accomodate the rapid changes to tuissue and muscles.

As soon as the work finished my arms started to go back to their original size and the cramps stopped straight away.
Too much muscle development too quickly is my diagnosis.
