Well, popped out earlier for a quick 15-20 miler after work and decided to set myself a good pace.
No real wind and and just four bumps to push over
Well anyway I got 5 miles out and realised that if I took a little loop it would be about 10 miles.
Anyway I then decided to push as much as poss and hit the stop button on my GPS thing just round the corner from home.
So it was a time of 31 mis 20 secs which I'm really happy with.
I know thats slow in the big picture but I'm 48 and still weigh 17stone (down from just over 19 at the start of the year)
For info my HR AVG was 174 and my max was 201 (avg % was 89 and max was 103%)
Is the fact I got to 103% good or bad

Completely irrelevant, it just means your max is wrong.
Well done on pushing, and now you've got a target for next time! Do it at least once a month and watch the times plummet!Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
Not sure its wrong.
I tested myself at the start of the year and the max I got to on my turbo traner before conkng out was 199.
I wonder if my improvements have allowed my body to push itself harder and thus the higher max ?0 -

Just did a quick search. Max HR is a genetic thing and cannot be improved by training.
It is unlikely you will achieve a true max HR on a regular turbo session. Normally you would do something like a ramp test to determine your true max HR.
What you've done is get a higher reading than previous - but this isn't necessarily your true max HR. It is likely you can still achieve a higher HR.
I think I've also read that cycling is actually easy on the heart and other forms of exercise can push your heart closer to it's true limit. (Could be wrong on this one).
P.S. Impressive that you at 48 you have a max HR around 200.0 -
Your maximum heart rate is the maximum rate that your heart will physically beat.
Its genetic, your MHR never increases, you can never exceed your MHR, although your MHR does reduce by roughly 1bpm per year as the muscle fibres harden with age.
If you've ever exceeded your MHR, then your MHR was wrong in the first place.0 -

It's more common for average people to be able to hit max HR in running than in cycling, but there's no rule about it, all it really depends on is where you're hitting your limits in the particularly sport ie it's pretty obvious in arm curling that there's no way you'll get to the max HR than if you run, your arm will fall off long before you use all the oxygen your heart could provide. It'll be similar with other sports, although less immediate obviously.Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -
Max attainable HR can also reduce as fitness improves.
Most people could get a higher HR running then cycling because running generally uses more muscles (i.e. upper body to an extent). Likewise, a cross country skier can get a higher HR than they would running.
Of course this could vary depending on individual, if for example they had economical running form but poor cycling form.0
