ochrwyth out of Risca is tougher than the pointy climb, I'm telling you.

If you head east a bit you can have a shot at Symonds Yat Rock, that's ~25%.

Constitution Hill is the obvious one, it's the steepest hill I know of in South Wales although I haven't seen Old Welshman's favourite yet! Sections of the Llanelly Hill climb between Gilwern and Brynmawr are about 25%. As others have said climbs with meaningful lengths at that gradient are few and far between. The Rhigos and Bwlch are reasonably flat, maybe 10% in places, but are long. I suspect the climb on the sportive is exaggerated or more likely that is the steepest section but the climb (assuming it is longish) will average far less.

Llanelly Hill climb which road do you mean? as there are two roads connecting Llanelly Hill with Clydach the Cuckoo (station road) that takes a fairly direct route up or the Beach Woods road that takes a diagonal across the valley and clips the edge of the Beach woods.

Station Road was the one I was thinking of.

Sean, not sure Ochrwyth is that bad (although I've only been up there in a car I have to admit).

Ochrwyth possibly meets the 25% mark in places, it's not the nicest though. Quite narrow in places so not good if you meet a car coming the other way and the road surface is shite, pot-holey and gravelly. Apart from that it's fine. :?

I'd echo oldwelshmans comments about the climb going out past Pontypriddd Golf Course....it is savage!

Went down it a month or two ago on a wet club run behind a few guys on fixies - The phrase 'scared shitless' has never been more appropriate.

I must be doing something wrong then. I happy to spin a 39 up Ponty golf course climb but Ochrwth has me spuing.

Agreed it's pot holed, there's quite a bit of gravel and there's green moss on the road surface right on the parts where you really want to stand up. Still a cracking ride from work though

    DISCO!!!

"Climb the hill past Ponty Rugby club till you get to the roundabout, turn right towards the school and as you go up immediately turn left up a lane and keep on climbing, eventually after much climbing and a very short descent (The rough part ) you get to a junction, turn left for the top of the graig or right for Tonyrefail , if you have time give it a go :)"

I think much of this climb is actually along NCN 4 - that probably tells you as much about SUSTRANS as you need to know.

Around Ponty the hardest has to be the lane up behind the college. It is generally slippy as well as a ridiculous percentage. Hardest realistic one would be the golf club climb - again the road surface doesn't help. Graig and Graigwen aren't anywhere near 25% I don't think. Nice hard climbs though.

There's a couple on the Gower I know of - north away from of Oxwich and out of Horton are both pretty steep. The one up to Lunnon is pretty harsh too.

The one that goes from the Uni to Upper Church Village is horrible, it even hurts your hands going down as it's so steep in on the bend.

Amazing! I had no idea people even tried? I assume the people who live up the hill generally come at it from the top? Must have been bad when it was shut off due to the landslide!

Yeah caused a bit of shenamagins but after a week people adapted, like they always do. I think issue is Satnav routes that way from pentyrch to Treforest/nantgarw.
