Me and my husband have been following a very similar weight loss regime since February, and I have to agree with the others that I would not have lost any weight unless I had cut down my calorie intake as well.
To maintain weight a woman's daily intake should be 2000 calories; to lose 1 - 11/2 lbs per week this should reduce to 1400. 600 calories is a lot of work on the turbo per day.
I used an internet calorie counter for a couple of weeks. It gave me a feel for how much I should be eating each day, and also helped me identify innocent seeming foods that are very high in calories - like nuts and fruit for example. You can also use it to make sure that you get the occasional treat without feeling guilty too! Also, don't skip meals and drink lots of water.
Finally, your GF should not necessarily expect instant results. I didn't lose any weight for a long time, but I was getting thinner 'cos I had to tighten my belt (literally).
Anyway, I have now shifted half a stone, and my husband (who isn't as lazy and does a lot more on the bike) much more. I hope your GF finds it works for her too. Good luck!0 -

YEs - its only at best a qualified guess whatever HRM you use - and Garmins are renowned for over estimating. A better guide would be gained if one knew how fast she could ride in real life and whether that tied in with the 600 kcal an hour estimate. personally 600kcal for me would be working quite hard perhaps to teh point I wouldnt want to do it every day for any longer period.0 -

Portion size is the big problem for many people.
A woman's recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calories is 1940 up to the age of 50, then 1900 until 75. That assumes an 'average sized' woman who doesn't do a lot of exercise. If smaller sized, then obviously the RDA should be less...
For example, on this measure, my GF's RDA is supposedly around 1600 calories, as she's fairly small. If she followed the 2000 calories per day guideline (which thankfully she doesn't), she'd have a 400 calorie per day surplus, and in theory be banging on a 1lb of fat every 9 days, all other things being equal, adding up to nearly 3 stone in a year!0
