On the basis that I've never done it, this winter Im adding in some single leg sets on the turbo. having tried one I'm left with the question, what do you do with the non-cycling leg ?

Comments

  • why do reps with 1 leg ?
    going downhill slowly
  • When I've done them (I dont any longer - don't really seem to achieve much) I hooked teh restingfoot over the turbo frame /quick release. But I bnever did them on the road...

It teaches you to pedal a 'full stroke'. Not simply mashing down on the pedals with each leg - but pedaling a full circle. Pulling up AND pushing down.

But some articles I have read say it isn't needed as the most efficient way to pedal is actually just pushing down with alternate legs and not worrying about the pulling up part.

Would it help sort imbalance between legs?

Not unless you are doing work with an inertial loaded non-drive pedal (with around 10-12kg on the non-drive pedal). In that sense it can enable:
    - a rider to do some moderate cycling exercise if one leg/foot is injured and can't be used
    - then some extra work on rehab leg when it is ready.

Without the inertial loading, it's pretty much a gimmick for amusement/passing time.
