  • Since when was this about servers?
It's about operating systems. Servers require a stable OS.
Do you know the difference in kernels between Win 7 and Server 2008?
    NT 6. x ring a bell?

Stick to cycling - at least you only crash once in a while - unlike Windows.

What's your problem? You need to get it sorted.

As for the latest Ubuntu looking good, everyone has their own tastes, but as with nearly all Linux OS's, I find it's ugly and not as easy to navigate than Windows. I prefer ease of use, not going through all sorts of stuff to do something simple.
    games are not OS's.

Some are, you can play a game such as, how long can I resist pulling my hair out?

To open something you use that ^

Installing applications in the standard installer is easy, far easier than windows. But I agree sometimes you have to go into terminal.

I can show how to get Linux Mint which is more in the Windows style and easier to use for a Windows User if you like.

  • If your winning arguement is how "pretty" Windows 7 is, you fail. You can customise Linux how you like.

    Have you tried Linux?

Also noticed you have quad core, what do you use your computer for? Just internet and browsing, or games, video & music rendering/encoding? Photoshop?

I do like Windows-at least XP, have tried Windows 7 seems good but need a better spec PC (more RAM but Linux has a place. But Linux still needs improvement, but is to the point of a suitable alternative for Windows, as long as you're not a gamer (which I am)

erm got your computers mixed up...why don't you game on the desktop, and laptop for net/office? Laptops aren't great for gaming (even those at £2000) can buy a lot more for your cash on a desktop...and run faster anyway (faster hard drives for one thing)

Course I don't use it just for BR. I play games on my PC and used to use it for Photoshop.

I use it for TV, Games, Internet, Music, that's about it.

I got a 3.7GHz quad cause a 4GHz dual was not fast enough.

For me, Linux is a no go, and I don't have the heaps of time to learn how to use it efficiently. On my system Windows is no slower than Linux.

Heaps? Once it installs, maybe 20 minutes to get where things are. But I agree if things don't go to plan, then need to learn about terminal (command prompt)

Your system is "no slower" because have a high end PC. I notice the difference myself (2Ghz X2 dual core 2GB RAM)

Linux is great for a second OS, in case Windows goes down. At least have it on USB stick or burnt off onto a CD-R, in case something happens to Windows (if you don't think it will, you're a fool) That way you can retreive your data safetly. Also good in case of a major infection, boot upto Linux, backup data, then wipe wipe/reinstall windows.

Lol I bet I get out more than you.

If Windows goes down I'll run a backup and it'll be back on within minutes.

I'm not saying nothing will go wrong with Windows, but the likelihood my installation of Windows is going to go down to such a degree it cannot be used or repaired is very slim. I have never had a failure of Windows 7 or Windows Vista. I re-install every 6 months anyway.

If my Windows installation did ever go down, even if I wiped that Windows partition, I would not loose any data, I don't store things on Windows partition, that's not good.

All my Uni work is backed up to my laptop via Synctoy.

Lets face it, an X2 dual core is not that fast, unless you're on about Phenom 2 x2?
  • AMD X2 64bit. It's fast- can play most newer games at 1920x1080, highest settings. but if the OS is a bit of a hog with CPU, then need more power to get around that. Some games are faster in Win7 64, some are slower. But since I get black screen of death, given up with Windows 7 until I get a whole new system. Sticking to XP 32bit for now.

I'm not familiar with a black screen of death, sounds like a driver issue. I know the BSOD though.

How many games are actually able to take full advantage of multiple cores? For gaming I'd have got the 4Ghz dual but ETTO. (Genuine question btw: I've been out of modern gaming for a while and last I heard was a few would take upto two cores, and some were offloading phys processing onto the GPU).

  • Thanks everyone. I have had alovely weekend of defragging and cleaning up and my PC is running much better. Also i am thinking about the whole LInux thing, but perhaps i need more time.

Just had a read through of Sundays posts and it does get quite heated on here sometimes, doesn't it.

Is it now time to mention that Hitler had a PC/ windows/ Linux and terminate the thread - or do you want to continue the debate.

    Anyway, genuinely many thanks.
