Well only when it gets icy.
After last Winter's ice and the year before's massive crash and damage on ice on the roads, I've bought a MTB...forgive me please
I was petrified last Winter by the ice on the roads. I'd make it out 2 miles and see ice across the road and panic & turn back for home.I didn't want to trash my bike or my soon to be 45 yr old slow healing body
Since my now non existant marital state has occurred and I have nobody to answer to apart from my conscious to hold me back, I've bought a MTB for Winter riding
(My GF has a MTB and she is very supportive)

I've bought an entry level MTB, a Cube Aim (same brand as my road bike)
My Cube Aerial has performed faultlessly the past 18 months and I'm hoping the MTB will follow in the same manner.

I love road riding but I panic on the icey roads but I don't want to not cycle over the cold months. As I live in the New Forest I have a lot of offroad area's at my doorstep. This will hopefully keep my fitness up.

Please say I'm not ostracised by the community for my cowardace & please forgive me

Yeah as a part time roadie, "full time" MTBer I' say that is definately a false economy right there! Those berms and drops you "leave for the kiddies" now will become too tempting!

Dont worry flash, we all dabble with taboo stuff. I have a scott scale 70 hardtail I plan to ride all winter too. I am a bad man and I love it.
  • The Popes here this week, and instead of forgiving you he'd tell you to MTFU and get out on that winter ice.

The MTB is only the start...

Next comes the football shorts, the trainers, the gel saddle and the Camelback. Then he'll really let himself go and stop shaving his legs, all his posts will be in text speak and he'll be calling everyone "Dude".

Perhaps we should club together and take out a contract on him? It's the least we can do, it would be cruel to see him suffer like a dog.

I prefer mtbing to road riding. But it just doesn't let me inflict pain on others like road riding. Plus, I like shaved legs.

I used to be a mad keen MTBer, about 15 years of XC and Freeriding ended when I just couldn't take riding with groups that would crawl uphills, with the excuse of "I hit a root"or "I spun out on a rock" every time they minced out on a climb.

Once they eventually got to the top there was a rest of about 10 minutes whilst everyone adjusted rebound, pro-pedal damping, lowered the seatpost, let out some air in the tyres and about a million other adjustments, to freewheel down the other side!

For many years now I have just ridden road, and love the nowhere to hide nature of it, if you can't keep up, or make it up the climb, no amount of excuses are going to cut it...

I'm NOT stopping road riding ...I LOVE IT!!. I really do. I just don't like the prospect of crashing on the ice and damaging me or my beloved road bike.
There are absolutlely loads of Forestry trails in the New Forest and very close by.
I thought that this was just a more fun way of keeping my fitness up over the icey months and not being so risky. I think a turbo would be a waste of money as my concentration drifts (depression) I wouldn't use it after the novelty had worn off.

My road cycling buddy has a MTB as does my GF and so does one of the guys at work that wants to ride with me. If the ice isn't there it will be road all the way.

MTBing in a forest on a crisp, clear frosty morning is freakin' awesome.
