2 weeks holiday off bike - fitness deteriorated shockingly!

Crikey.
After a couple of weeks car touring California and slobbing, with just a few sessions on a static hotel gym bike, my commute in today has been woefully slow and my legs seemingly have no power anymore. My lungs feel like they shrunk too.
Will I pick up again swiftly ? I hope so as it feels almost like when I started cycling back in April.
Good job the season is practically over for TTs as I couldn't face the usual Weds evening TT with my club this week!

I think 2 weeks is about the threshold for reduced fitness, but I am suprised its dropped alot, its probably a bit of "getting back into the swing of it" after a holiday too!!
It should pick back up pretty quickly 8)
(theres a crit at Norwich airport P&R on sunday if you fancy it, would be a good, hard training session )0 -
I was just about to post the same! Had 2 weeks off in Spain. Actually thought about taking the bike but couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Still did a run every other day and 1000 meters swimming every day.
Went for a ride on Saturday and it felt such hard work! HR was sky high and on the one big climb of the ride I actually stopped the bike to check the brakes weren't binding it felt that hard. Hopefully will get back some fitness in the next weeknor so as signed up to the tour of the pennines on the 18th September0 -
It gets worse with age. 2 weeks until your early twenties is no worry but when your'e in your fifties and if it's a static 2 weeks it hurts.0

I had 10 days off the bike earlier this year, following an extended holiday thanks to the Icelandic volcano - I have to say I didn't feel any different at all on my first ride back. I guess everyone is different and a lot of it probably depends on how much time on the bike you have put in before the break....0

Yea - i am 43 and feel it!
Funny - 5-7 days rest and I can come back stronger for the recovery but 2 weeks....
may be jet lag and daily boozing doesn't help!
Sure it'll come back soon
Dan:

No, not really up to a 50 yet, next year for sure.
I am (hopefully) doing the EACC 10 on 25th Sept, and the NABC 10 on 2nd Oct though.
Crit is certainly good fun, very different from everything else, lots of tight cornering0 -

I had 2 weeks all inclusive - and felt dreadfull on the bike for around 3 weeks. The way I got round it was doing longer slower rides - and drinking plenty of water.
I also think you get used to eating more over 2 weeks hols - then you come back and cut it dead - its almost like going on a crash diet - and the symptoms described are similar.0 -
You are so right about the eating thing. 3 meals a day and American portions, put on only 1kg but the effects are more profound and as you say the crash diet of working life here is a shock to the system again.kingrollo wrote:lotuseater wrote:Yea - i am 43 and feel it!

A week of croissants, baguettes and champagne has taken its toll on me. Legs felt rubbish yesterday, will just have to suck it up.
I'm sure its also psychological. The beach is less hassle than a 2km of 8-12% and drizzle.0 -

Today is my first day back on the bike after the 6 weeks' summer break - my legs are fine but my lungs have shrunk to the size of peanuts. Bah!Litespeed Tuscany, Hope/Open Pro, Ultegra, pulling an Extrawheel trailer, often as not.

I'm taking a whole week off the bike atm, I usually find after a week I am a hell of alot slower but we'll see this time.0
