Looking for a hill near Sheffield....

That is:
1) Around 6-7km long with an average gradient of 6-7% (so it'll take me ~20 minutes to get up it). Steeper and shorter or less steep and longer will do
2) Preferably with no dips, but smallish dips or level bits will be okay
3) No traffic lights or junctions where I'll get held up
4) Within an hours ride from Sheffield
5) Not too much traffic
Something like Fiddlers Elbow (from Hathersage) but longer would be ideal. The best I can come up with is actually the climb up Eccleshall Rd - Knowle Rd - Ringinglow Rd which is about the right length, but there're two sets of traffic lights and a right turn to hold me up.
Its for FTP testing in case you hadn't guessed.
A slightly related question:
If you did 4 x 10 minute intervals with 4 minutes rest at X Watts, what percentage of X would be an appropriate FTP estimate?

Long Hill out of Whalley Bridge heading up towards Buxton might be in your wheelhouse.
Almost 5 miles long and a steady gradient all the way up. I used it for my FTP testing all the time.0 -
snakes pass?
does it have to be a hill? what about a loop you can do an infinite # of times? thats how I do my hour tests0 -
Sorry what does FTP stand for?0

Here you go
Option 1: Rivelin Post Office to Barncliffe Stoop. Exactly 5.5 km according to Google but only one teesny dip by Hallam FC, no lights and no traffic to spoil your rhythm. You can quickly coast down Lodge Lane to pick up the car or do it all over again.

Option 2: Rivelin PO up to Moscar Top. 6km but some of the drivers and bikers can be a bit weird on that stretch. You'll have to backtrack all the way unless you're making a day of it.

Bit far away at ~43km so I'd probably have to drive part way or ride there very slowly, but looks like a good bit of road.Team Banana Spokesman wrote:snakes pass?

Horrible bit of road. I'd prefer a hill to a loop.eltonioni wrote:Here you go

Neither would take anywhere near 20 minutes. Option 1 involves a right turn across traffic. Option 2 is not a pleasant section of road.
Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing right yet
Current thinking is either Fiddlers Elbow, but starting at the turn off for Bamford which would be about 15 minutes or the A625 from Froggat which is about 16 minutes as well, but with a couple of junctions to negotiate (used to be really nice road until the council chipped it). Both a bit short though....More problems but still living....0 -
Depends on what sort of power you are putting out. Long Hill CAN take more than 20 mins. Depends on your fitness. Helps to start at the bottom too.0

What about the roads out of Sheffiield?
1. Back road out to Ringinglow, drops down to Hathersage.
2 Main road from Sheffield to Hathersage past Foxhouse pub
3. " " " " via Totley Rise to big r/bout on Bakewell Road
4. Climb out of Calver Sough to Bakewell Rd/Foxhouse
5. climb out from Bakewell to Totley r-bout
All longish and steady inclines as I remember.M.Rushton0 -

Edale to Mam Nick?? Bit steep but pretty constant - dont know if that matters, never done FTP test, probably not 20 mins though.
Snake out of Glossop probably best I can think of, dire bit of road though, more than an hour from Sheff.
Holme Moss?? Again over an hour from Sheff.0 -
There're plenty of hills around up to about 10 minutes, but none that I can think of that fit all my criteria above.More problems but still living....0

Have you tried the A621 from Baslow to Owler Bar? Its probably not quite steep enough but it does go on a bit.
Another option that is a bit longer than the Fidlers Elbow route is to go out of the back of Hathersage, ending up under Stanage Edge and then up to Burbage carpark. Obvioulsy not the as much gradient as the fidlers route though since they start and finish in the same place.
Other than that I'd say stick with Hunters bar to Ringlow but do it early on Sunday morning as there is lower chance of having to stop.0
